Zoo Keeper
I'm researching the possibility of having one of my boys do some remedial work with WRTR. A friend is willing to let me look over her 3rd ed.; from past threads it seems many folks like the 4th ed....anyone know what the differences are between the 3rd and 4th editions? Ellie
It doesn't matter. The third (is that the red one?) had some errors, IIRC, so fourth and up would be better.

I'll go on a hunt for the 4th edition. Bit of trivia: I just found out that the third edition that my friend (who is an elementary teacher) was willing to let me look over was the *exact book* that I was taught from waaay back when. Both my friend and myself had the same teacher K-3, and when that dear lady retired, my friend inherited her things. I had no idea that I was taught phonics with Spalding...I only remember that reading and spelling have always been easy for me. As I'm looking through this third edition (which is literally falling apart), I'm finding handwritten notes from Mrs. __. Lots of warm cozy feelings going on... Anyway, thanks for replying, Ellie. I was hoping to hear from you.
Hunter
I like the 4th in general, and the 6th for the cursive handwriting instructions.
Zoo Keeper
Thanks, Hunter. More opinions from folks I respect (like you!) are making me go on a hunt for the 4th edition.
Hunter
At the very least, the 4th comes with flashcards. Also, it's the last edition written by the author; it's cozier. :D
AdventureMoms
The 4th is available cheap/used from amazon.

If you cut the spine off the book, you can remove those and use them as flashcards (although they would need to be laminated); then you can drill the book drilled with three holes and keep it in a three-ring notebook. That's what I do (with *all* three editions of mine!).
silver
I found the 4th easiest to read and understand the method from. I read the 5th right after the 4th and it made much more sense than just reading the 5th had. That being said, I plan on teaching from the 5th edition. I like the alphabetical index of the words from the extended ayers list.
