mom2denj
I have Flying Creatures 1 & 2. I also have the Astronomy. We have not formally done any science yet. My daughter will be in 2nd grade next year. Which book should I start out with? Also, should I buy the notebooking journal or just make our own? Are they worth the money? rdj2027
My daughter is in 4th grade and we started with the Flying Creatures because he loves animals and will do Anatomy last because she isn't looking forward to the discussion of bodily functions or innards. We may not use Apologia after the Zoology series though.
Hottater
I used astronomy 1st and my son is in second. I would recommend journal. Just because my kid loves cutting and pasting things and drawing. He didn't care for all the fill in the blank stuff, but I wrote down his thoughts and did 1 crossword puzzle with him. ...................
Astronomy is the easiest, so start with that. Also I would get the Jr. Notebooking journal.
ChicoryChick
We love the Apologia Elementary series; however, I would not use them with the average 2nd grader (which all but one of my children were). I usually start them in third grade with Astronomy. I just got Botany this year so am unsure how early I would use it.

Even though my youngest ds is fairly advanced they would be too heavy for him. My third grader is doing good with them though and my dd can handle them with the Jr. Notebook. PachiSusan
My 3rd grader had a bit of a tough time with zoo 1 so we stopped. We'll do it next year. We did Astronomy with the notebook journal and she loved it and it was perfectly age appropriate for her. If your kids like cutting and pasting - you MUST have the journal. It was my carrot. She read the material - she got to cut! LOL
angelmama1209
my oldest is in 2nd and is LOVING astronomy. and learning so much. we have the jr notebook and use it, but dd could take it or leave it. really.
mom2denj
Thank you all so much! Astronomy is what we will start with. Thank you for all the input, I will be purchasing the jr. notebook because my daughter loves to cut and paste.
Hottater
oh, we are almost finished botany. I forgot, we did apologia astronomy last year for 1st grade not this year for 2nd. My ds loves science and art, so it wasn't an issue.
flmom
I started out with astronomy years ago with my oldest. He did his own notebook pages. I'm using it this year with my 1st grader. He is doing lapbooking.
Down_the_Rabbit_Hole
We are doing Astronomy with a 2nd grader and not enjoying it much (but I think it is the subject not the curriculum ), we were using the journal. I added in the lapbook (dropped the journal) and am reading the Astronomy book to dd and it is going better. I will not be doing anymore Apologia Exploring books until 5th grade. My ds did all the zoology books and Botany in grades 5 and 6 doing 2 a yr and he loved them.
