Catchingup1964
My son is in 8th grade and is involved in an oratorical presentation that he has to be ready for February 12. He wants to memorize a section from "The Hobbit". It has to be fairly long. I'm not familiar with the book and he hasn't read it for awhile. Does anyone know it well enough to give me some direction on this? Thanks so much! Staci
redsquirrel
Those first couple of paragraphs are pretty memorable. I can still recite the very first sentence by heart. In a hole in the ground.....

Esse Quam Videri
It would also be fun to memorize the Misty Mountain song, or any of the poems/songs.
Lori D.
Yes, those were my thoughts, too: - the opening paragraphs of the book - Misty Mountain song - or, the dialog/back and forth paragraphs of the riddles with Gollum (then DS could do 2 voices)
Walking-Iris
Those are the three most memorable parts. I also know the first part of the first chapter by heart!
OrdinaryTime
If he is good with voices, I think the riddles with Gollum would be awesome!

Julie Smith
Here is something to get him (and others reading this thread) in the Hobbit mood.
Leav97
Gandalf: Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love. Why Bilbo Baggins? I don't know. Perhaps because I am afraid, and he gives me courage.
happypamama
My kids love the dwarves' song about the plates and all, but I am not quite sure how long it is; it's been 23 years since I read it.
