Do you call your spouse's blood relatives your nieces/nephews?

All of the nephews on both sides of the family are both "ours". My kids are all teens, but they still call my brother's new wife Aunt Nicole, and she refers to them as her nephews/niece as well.

 

I have 3 very close friends that have been around since high school or when the kids were very young. They are also referred to as "Aunt/Uncle" by the boys, with those children being my children's cousins. I do sometimes refer to them as my nieces and nephews depending on the circumstances, as they call me Auntie as well.

 

I've heard of "my husband's niece or nephew" but I think it's weird. To me, when you get married, you're marrying into a family as well. To constantly refer to someone as "my husband's whatever" just seems odd.

They are my nieces and nephew. They are the only ones I can claim! I love them like they were my own kids, so the blood-relation thing doesn't even occur to me.

I call them my nieces and nephews generally. My brother doesn't have any kids - DH's 3 brothers have a total of 10 kids. They have all been born/adopted since dh and I got married (oldest is almost 12, youngest is due to be born next week).

I also call the wives of my bils my sils.

My husband insisted that my sister in law was not really my sister in law, though. He said I should refer to her as my brother in law's wife. (She is his brother's wife.) I was like, "Really???":lol:
