Juliegmom
I have two highschoolers (9th and 11th) who are homeschooling through an online charter school. I don't feel that they are receiving enough writing insturction and would like to supplement with a writing program. They were in public school for K-8 and were taught 6 trait writing. My concern is having them well prepared for college. I can't afford anything too pricey and want something they can use together. Any recommendations? 4wildberrys
My recommendations are Elegant Essay by IEW followed up by IEW Advanced Communication Series. Both will prepare for college writing and are what I am going to use with my ds to get I'm ready ;)
jessicalb
I plan on using IEW's basic program all through high school for the writing portions of our English courses.
mschickie
The two best programs I have seen/used are IEW (which can be pricey) or Jensen's Format Writing. Either program can be done for both of those grades at the same time.
8filltheheart
If they are solid writers (meaning they have mastered the writing process and don't need instruction on how to compose a paragraph or an essay) and you want a text to help them improve their writing stylistically, I would recommend Norton's writing guide. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=norton+handbook+of+writing
Candid
I will encourage you to buy and listen to SWB's A Plan for Teaching Writing. I'd get both middle school and high school and figure out where you are on her plan. She suggests some resources. I used those last year and am going with this: http://classicalwriting.com/Herodotus.htm for this year. I decided try to use that from this thread: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/printthread.php?t=348864&pp=50&page=
rockala
We have used The Potter School for writing and dd scored very high in writing and language arts on the SAT. Specifically the goal is to be able to quailify for the advanced comp course for junior year. They write specifically for the SAT at the end of junior year. Juliegmom
What do you think about using Writing Strands 6 or 7? For those of you that have used it, which one would be better if I want the instruction to emphasize essay writing and a research paper?
