I only have a girl, so my suggestions may lean a bit to the "girly" side, but off the top of my head:

The Princess and the Goblin

The Sword in the Stone

King of the Wind

The Invention of Hugo Cabret

Mrs. Piggle Wiggle

Nurse Matilda

Half Magic

The Witches

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Stuart Little

Trumpet of the Swam

The Cricket in Times Square

The Secret Garden

Farmer Boy (and others from the Little House on the Prairie series)

The Jungle Book

Because of Winn-Dixie

The Tale of Desperaux

The Railway Children

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (and the rest of the Narnia series)

The Children of Green Knowe (also a series)

A Bear Called Paddington

Off the top of my head....

Skinnybones

Boxcar Children

Little House on the Prairie series

The Lost Children

if they are religious, we love the Dangerous Journey (a child friendly version of Pilgrim's Progress)

The Indian in the Cupboard

ETA: Mrs. Piggle Wiggle is great, like a PP mentioned! And the "Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" is great too. :)

My almost 7yo boy enjoyed The Hobbit and the first two Harry Potter books. This summer, we've read Charlotte's Web, Little House in the Big Woods, and we're currently reading Little House on the Prairie (with a few stops to discuss racism.)
