Heather in Neverland
This is for a rising 5th grade boy with a low "boredom" threshold. :D Thanks!
Hoggirl
My ds also read Mara, Daughter of the Nile. Honestly, he wasn't too keen on either one, but, then again, historical fiction is not his genre of choice. Golden Goblet is more "boy" to me. Also, just so you know there is some romance/flirting and I think one kiss in Mara.
Heather in Neverland
I'm such a dork. I tried to edit and ended up posting twice. Sheesh...can a moderator delete this and save me humiliation???
AmyTompkins
The Cat of Bubastes by G. A. Henty. Awesome totally boy-ish book that most girls would likely enjoy as well.:) Also Within the Palace Gates by Ann P. Silver is an excellent read against the backdrop of ancient Persia. </div>
Heather in Neverland
That's interesting because I heard that the Henty books were "boring" which is why I avoided them. Hmmm...maybe I will take another look now!
AuntPol
Boy of the Pyramids by Ruth Fosdick Jones. It's out of print but I was able to get it via an inter-library loan or you can get it as an e-book at Simply Charlotte Mason http://simplycharlottemason.com/books/boy-of-the-pyramids/
Julie
I have not read it but it is on my list for fall, Shadow Hawk, by Andre Norton, the description sounds boyish.
Heather in Neverland
Thanks for all the replies! I think we are going with: The Golden Goblet The Cat of Bubastes Thanks for the advice!
M&M
That's interesting because I heard that the Henty books were "boring" which is why I avoided them. Hmmm...maybe I will take another look now! I picked up the Cat of Bubastes at a homeschooling conference. I was told that he gently abridged the Henty books so that they don't drag on so long. *I* enjoyed reading Cat of B, but I know ds would not, so I got the CD, I haven't listened to it yet. DB in NJ
I second the Golden Goblet. It starts off a little slow -- tell him to just sit and listen while you read it aloud. Before you know it, you can't put the thing down. And I end up in tears every time I read it -- good tears. Love, love, love it.
Tami
Others I haven't see listed and plan on getting are The Egypt Game (Scholastic) and Story of the Amulet by E. Nesbit. Also, movies about the Exodus, like "10 Commandments."
Plaid Dad
My dd is loving Tales of Ancient Egypt right now. It's not historical fiction, but a collection of Egyptian myths and legends, retold by Roger Lancelyn Green.
