Vida Winter
We camped earlier this week at Oswald West State Park, just south of Cannon Beach, Oregon. On Monday, in the middle of the night, we awoke to the sound of a huge tree falling. It sounded like rifle fire, a huge cracking, and when it hit the ground, it felt like an earthquake. It was a 300-400 year old spruce that was about 7' in diameter. The campsites are hike-in only, and the sites are packed closely together although the forest provides a lot of privacy for each site. It was an absolute miracle that no one was harmed. Picnic tables and equipment were smashed, trails blocked, and another tree came down hanging peilously over the rest rooms, but the tree missed everyone. I called our camp-out off and we came home 2 days early. That night I could not stop shaking. Hold your children close; life is so precious. Thank God that we were not crushed. Here are the news stories that I found: http://www.dailyastorian.com/Main.asp?SectionID=2&ArticleID=52338 http://www.kxl.com/tabid/72/itemid/16031/Tree-falls-in-Oswald-West-State-Park.aspx# http://www.komonews.com/news/local/20973024.html
Marie in Oh
How frightening. I am so glad you and yours and everyone at the camp are ok. I know exactly where that is. I may have been there as we vacationed at Canon Beach years ago. It is so beautiful. Again, so glad you are safe.

nancypants
Wow!! I know that sound. It's eery and awful. I heard a Redwood tree fall once. The groaning and cracking was awful... and it hit a power line so it was followed by a lowed explosion! My sister had a portion of a Redwood land on her roof (part of it came right into their bathroom!) as her early morning wake up call. So scary! I'm so glad that everyone is okay!
