Bokons
My 2nd ds who turned 13 in January seems to be developing bre*st buds, especially on one side. He is not overweight, so I don't think it's extra fat in that area. I noticed last week when he was wearing a thin shirt, that one side seemed to be protruding more than the other. Then today at swimming lessons, I was watching him from a distance, and his chest looked like what a girl's would when she is just starting to develop. So tonight, I felt around both sides, and there is definitely a hard lump on both sides, but once side is a bit bigger than the other. I remember developing like this when I started puberty. I will be making an appointment for him with the doctor, but in the meanwhile, has anyone else's dss had this happen to them? I am trying not to worry. Upward Journey
All of my younger brothers (3) had breast buds when they hit puberty. All thin. My dad had them, my nephew has them. I can't even remember if my own son had them, but I think that he did. It just wasn't on my radar because of watching my brothers grow up. So my vote is normal. But you should take him to the doctor if it will put your mind at ease :)
besroma
My vote is normal. They have tons of hormones raging through their bodies during liberty. The buds, which can also be tender, go away in time.
ThisIsTheDay
Here's a link that breast bud development on boys can be on one or both sides. Your poor son! I can't imagine my 13yods allowing me to feel around his chest. It seems to me like too private of an area to have mom poking around. By what you've described, I wouldn't think you have anything to worry about. Most, if not all, of the boys we know wear board shirts with swim shorts. While we bought my ds a few for swimming, he likes his so much that he often wears them as a regular shirt. :grouphug::grouphug:
bethben
My oldest (13 year old) has the same thing. Good to know it's not unusual. Beth
KirstenH
It's normal. I was just reading about it the other day; I think it was in the "Boy's Body Book."
DianeW88
Totally normal. It's called gynecomastia. The breasts can even be painful, like women's are during PMS or early pregnancy. It can last for years, but disappears by the late teens. Just part of puberty. If they grow too large, the excess tissue can be removed. Very simple surgery. Bokons
Thanks, everyone, for putting my mind at ease. When I discovered this, dh was at work. I told him about it when he came home and he said that he had the same thing when he was a kid. His brother and dad did too, so I guess it runs in his family. Good to know that it's nothing to worry about :001_smile:
