IMO, the conceptual explanations in MM are extremely thorough, especially WRT fractions/decimals/percents. She explains (and shows) every concept from multiple perspectives, walks them through each one step-by-step, and has kids constantly "translating" between fractions, decimals, percents, and division. By the time they finish MM, they really understand that those are just different ways of expressing the same thing. To me, this is one of the most important concepts for kids to understand, and yet it's something that even many adults do not seem to really "get."

OTOH, I did not like the Key To series at all (I returned the books I ordered). IMHO they are more like remedial workbooks, focusing on getting kids to apply the algorithms rather than fostering conceptual understanding.

Thanks this is exactly what I need. I am one of those people who never got fractions and decimals so I need something that will really help him understand.

:iagree:

MM Fractions is best at teaching concepts. KTF is great for practice and review.

MM is great, but Keys to... works well too. It is procedural and moves slowly, but theres a place for that too. Go with whichever you feel better about.

Overall, I would recommend MM, but both have a place... it just depends on your priorities and goals.
