Questions about flaxseeds...

My store sells flaxseeds that are not ground. I would like to buy them and add them to my smoothies & baked goods, but from what I can tell most people grind them. How would I go about doing that? Also, are you supposed to toast them in the oven first?

I just use a coffee grinder to grind flaxseeds, and then store the ground meal in the freezer. I have never toasted it first. You can also use your blender.

I don't toast them. I grind mine in my vitamix. You could also use a coffee grinder. I grind enough for about a week and store it in a jar in he fridge. The oils in it can go rancid quickly.

I don't toast them, but I grind whole flax seeds in my blender. I do about 3-4 cups at a time and store the ground flax in the fridge.

I use an electric spice and nut grinder from Cuisinart. It's the perfect size for grinding small amounts of flaxseeds , and the stainless steel bowl is removable and dishwasher safe. Before, I had been using an electric coffee grinder but it didn't have a removable bowl and the oil from the flaxseeds made it very difficult to clean thoroughly.

 

I keep the bag of whole flaxseeds in the freezer, grind small amounts at a time and store the unused ground meal in the refrigerator. (No toasting here either.)

Coffee grinder or food processor work well. I do not toast them either. If you have a small grinder, it's easy enough to grind it daily (my dad does this).

Thank you so much! This is helpful. I don't have a coffee grinder or a food processor but I do have a blender. I'll look into the cost of a coffee grinder.
