Heather in Neverland
We need to rent a car, preferably a mini van, for 6 weeks while we are in the United States and I CANNOT BELIEVE how expensive it is!!! I have never rented a car for such a long period of time. Any tips on how to do it without spending every dime we have?
KirstenH
In my experience, Enterprise is usually the cheapest.
gingersmom
The larger the car the more expensive it is going to be. Also if you need to take out insurance that is also going to drive the cost up. Can you rent a smaller car?
AHASRADA
We always use Thrifty; they have very reasonable rates. But, as the PP said, if you have to add insurance, it does become quite expensive.
Heather in Neverland
Yikes. I hadn't even thought about insurance. We are a family of 5 with one in a carseat and lots of driving to do with luggage. This is sounding more expensive than I even thought. Excelsior! Academy
For that length of time you might consider a lease car from a car rental place. It will likely be cheaper. Sometimes car rental places will rent for a month and require you to rerent. What they call a lease is often a better, cheaper longer term solution. TexasRachel
Check out renting away from the airport. When we went to Seattle last summer, it was cheaper to get a hotel, stay overnight, and the next morning for me to take a taxi to the car rental place a mile from the airport. We also got in at 11pm so it was nice to not have a drive after the flight. We saved about $400 by getting a hotel and renting not at the airport, but close. You will pay $$$$$$ for a minivan. We've looked into it, but most of the time it's cheaper to rent two cars than one minivan. So get the largest sized car you can or a suv if they're not to much. abacus2
In my shopping, minivans were double the cost of a car. For 5 people, get a midsized or large car instead. Frequently a car is actually better for carrying luggage.
Mrs Mungo
An SUV is often cheaper than a minivan. Go on expedia or travelocity and play with your options. Your bank, insurance or professional organization may have some kind of discount. That said, our bank has a discount, but renting online through expedia or such was still cheaper. Your insurance might cover car rental insurance (ours does), so that might not cost you extra. I agree that you can get different prices renting at the airport versus offsite, but keep in mind that you cannot return it to an airport one if you rent offsite and vice versa.
