Xilka
At what age will you, or did you, start introducing current affairs in your child's curriculum?
frugalmama
DD is a young 5 {but in 1st grade} and while I don't bring it up, she often watches the news with us and ask questions. I was about her age when I can remember watching the Berlin Wall come down on TV and knowing it was a big deal.
lisabees
I am loving your blog! Wow. ;) I've never really homeschooled during the elementary years, but my 11 year old enjoys Youngzine as a source for current events. Other than that, we talk about current events all of the time. regentrude
As soon as they are old enough to understand that there are other countries, politics, things happening. So, pretty much from the beginning.
nutella08
We've always talked about current events. But last year, DD8 started watching CNN Student News on the web daily. She finds the reporting easier to follow that "adult" news. DS6 has been watching along but the comprehension is definitely much shallower. http://www.cnn.com/studentnews/index.html
Walking-Iris
http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/ There's also the Learning Network of the new york times. I haven't done anything like this with my son yet because he doesn't seem ready for it. I think the "right" age all depends on maturity etc. I'd wait until the "logic stage" until I started really going into depth on any of these subjects and keep it in the realm of conversation at the younger ages. Mom0012
I started this year with my 6th and 4th graders. We begin our day by watching CNN Student News online together. For my son, I ordered Upfront news magazine from Scholastic and he reads to me whenever we're in the car together and then we discuss the articles. I've really enjoyed doing this with him. TGHEALTHYMOM
We are in our 2nd year of subscribing to World magazine, for our 6th and 8th graders and us. We have younger children and discuss many topics, sometimes too many so we have to be careful. We watch the local news 1-2 times a week and share stories we hear that are age appropriate or change the wording for younger ones.
