  1. We watch lots of History Channel documentaries on YouTube. So, if we're studying Mesopotamia, we'll read something, write something, watch something, and make a poster.
  2. Only one kid here. Our classroom is what used to be my shared office with dh. Dh got his own office, I took his desk, and ds took my old desk. But we have a small lap table that we use on the day bed (same room), and the bench I use at my desk is long and can also be used as a desk for us to work side by side with small chairs. So we have lots of options in a very small room and change around a lot throughout the morning. They are all very simple and cheap pieces of furniture and allow us a lot of moving and changing around. I remember hating about school the always sitting at the same desk, same view, same position...
  3. Guatemala. It's close. It's cheap. And the pronunciation is the clearest and least affected, unlike other countries who silence certain letters.
  4. I was like your daughter, and my mother had your same pull up your bootstraps attitude, which was good for me to a point, but past that point just made me feel alone and unprotected. Just make sure you give her lots of space to talk about it - but don't push. Life can be pretty crap sometimes. Some people just dwell on it more. BTW, what is she reading? If she stays up late reading, and came to your room late at night, maybe it's about what she was reading. FWIW - I've grown up to be a pretty practical person and no longer let irrational feelings get in my way. I worked hard to get there. Funny thing is that now the tables have turned and my mother, in her late 50's, was dealing with depression for the first time. Part of me wanted to say "Just Get Over It" like she used to say to me. Instead, I shared some of the techniques that worked for me. She definitely has a different view on the pulling up of bootstraps now.
  5. When my ds was 2, I set him up a collage station - a table with magazines and other cut-outable stuff, paper, and glue... We had it in the kitchen. He would stay at his station for hours upon hours, and made some pretty interesting 2-yr-old art.
  6. We use this free interactive site. We also just use print-out blank outline maps, globe, maps and atlases.
  7. Drench your hair and scalp in olive oil, and then comb with metal delousing comb. Next to you, have a cup of boiling water to dip the comb into, so that they die immediately and can't jump off. Reheat water every 7 minutes or so. The olive oil helps by making them stick to the comb. They also die from suffocation, as they can't breathe with the oil. Do it one day, and then a couple days later again. Repeat until nothing else comes off on the comb. When you sit down to the task, know that it's going to take a couple of hours.
  8. That's right, you heard me.... B O R I N G ... oh and I could just go on and on and on about all the reasons why I think homeschoolers are weird and goofy.... wait for it... here it comes... Happy April Fool's Day!
  9. We're using Mr. Q Life Science this year and ds likes it a lot. We combine with lots of science videos, a How-Things-Are-Made type book, and Unit Study on Ecosystems.
  10. We do a very casual music appreciation type class. We learn songs from different decades 50's - present. We discuss lyrics. We might spend an afternoon listening to Beethoven and reading about him on Wikipedia or some other Encyclopedia type site. We also have lots of instruments around the house, and even though we don't actually have any specific time to practice/play them, ds will pick them up cyclically and has learned (on his own) some guitar chords and some tunes on the piano.
  11. We had the same thing with a skateboard and two front teeth hitting a hand rail. You need to have them pulled, otherwise they will rot and damage the other teeth. That's what the dentist told us anyway. My ds was still several months away from naturally losing those teeth, so the new ones didn't come in for a while. He was front toofless for half a year.:D
  12. I have to constantly remind myself that a meteorite could hit us any moment, and that it's just not worth it. Whatever it is. That's my mantra nowadays.
