Poll: Does/did your 3rd grader know all the U.S. presidents?

My son (in second) memorizes facts on his own about space and his other areas of interest. The main one so far that's history-related is WW II. So he might be able to tell you about many battles and military leaders of that war, but for presidents he only knows a few.

 

Like PP, I also memorized them at one point for fun, but can't recall them today (presidents anyway). I don't see much value for an elementary student to know trivia about presidents. Some will naturally come up in a discussion of certain eras, but the rest aren't as important to an early study of history.

Nope. If some day he wants to, we'll memorize them. If not, well, I don't see what the importance of memorizing them would be.

I never memorized them either and I am still pretty successful. :tongue_smilie:

I voted no, because I've never made any of my kids memorize the presidents, nor will I. We have done the states and capitals before, but none of us remember them all now.

I doubt I will ever make the kids memorize the Presidents. They do know the monarchy of England through the Restoration (because that's where are are right now) and eventually they will know all of the states and capitals (when we get there).

No and no. My kids know the states because we have visited most of them and some of the capitals. They know a number of presidents but just through their other learning, not because I made them memorize them. I just don't see the point in memorizing things just for the sake of memorizing them.

I put they will know by the end of third grade, but I'm not sure about the capitals. I'll teach the presidents and states, and the major capitals.

I don't see the point in knowing all the presidents, but in 5th and 6th grade we'll work on the states and capitals. Oldest knows them, only one to go!:D

My 1st grader knows all the presidents, as does my 4th grader (he knew them last year). 1st grader knows because it's part of memory work.

 

Next semester we are going to work on state locations and capitals.
