My son (in second) memorizes facts on his own about space and his other areas of interest. The main one so far that's history-related is WW II. So he might be able to tell you about many battles and military leaders of that war, but for presidents he only knows a few.

 

Like PP, I also memorized them at one point for fun, but can't recall them today (presidents anyway). I don't see much value for an elementary student to know trivia about presidents. Some will naturally come up in a discussion of certain eras, but the rest aren't as important to an early study of history.

No and no. My kids know the states because we have visited most of them and some of the capitals. They know a number of presidents but just through their other learning, not because I made them memorize them. I just don't see the point in memorizing things just for the sake of memorizing them.
