Looking for Literary Analysis resources for just a few poems/books

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have a good resource for logic stage literature analysis? I don't want to use this type of tool for ALL of our literature at this stage, but there are some stories and poems that I'd like to have a little help with. Literary analysis is such a broad Internet search with so many possibilities that it boggles my mind. That is why I'm posting here to see if any of you out there in the HIVE might already know of where to go for help.

Here are a few titles that I'm going to be presenting to dd in the coming months. I don't want rhetoric level analysis, just enough supplement to help us think and discuss the pieces to add more meaning to our reading.

  • The Adventures of Don Quixote
  • The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Wordsworth poetry
  • Poe poetry (The Raven)
  • Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass

Thanks much for any suggestions you may have.

Blessings,

Lucinda

Since posting this last night, I have found a few of great sites for literature guides. I guess I should have done a bit more research before posting this thread....:tongue_smilie: But I thought I'd share some of what I've found in case this helps someone else.

At first when I posted I had been using 'nameofbook literature analysis' as my key words in my search and came up with so many choices that I didn't know where to begin. (Hence my request for input.) Then I switched to the keywords, 'nameofbook literature guide'. and voilà - up came a number of choices that fit the bill for logic stage, but it was not so overwhelming. Some of the guides do have a bit more information than I really need, but they look very worthwhile to use, even in part.

So far some sites I've found include Bibliomania and Glencoe (...thanks to Kfamily on another thread), which have some great helps - but they don't have the exact choices I'm looking for at this time. (They are still worthy of a bookmark though.) Then I came upon Core Knowledge, which covered two on my list and made me happy. Then I found Grade Saver, and there was what I need for Alice in Wonderland. Oh, and all of these sites are FREE, by the way.

The only thing I've yet to find is a source for the poetry. Any suggestions? And I'd still love to get more resources for literature to go along with what I've come up with so far. Please do share if you have any great sites or stores that carry useful materials for analysis and/or study guides.

Blessings,

Lucinda

I got the book Decoding Penguins and Teaching the Classics( workbook plus DVDs). These materials teach the parent how to do Lit Analysis with any book. TTC in particular has a great list of Socratic questions in the back to promote discussion.

These materials won't help if you are looking for something with vocabulary words or questions for a specific book. I found enough of that online for free, though. TTC is a bit pricey, but I think it will help us make it through high school. Penguins is reasonably priced and still very helpful for a younger student.

Penguins has some basic but useful information about poetry, as well.

Where have you found Decoding Penguins? Who is the publisher or author? I've looked at several websites and can't seemed to see it anywhere. Found Teaching the Classics, and it looks really great. That might be on my list for high school if we continue on with home educating.

Thanks for the tips!

I love Pink Monkey for any lit analysis.

Spark notes is also good and had poetry analysis, too.

I did see some great possibilities on Pink Monkey. Thank you!

Several of the links on the Spark notes site are not working. I haven't read any of their guides at all....the home page looks like a teen fan magazine. What's up with that?

Awesome sites, thanks so much!! I definitely need help with poetry. I don't know about you, but my education was not all that great when it came to literature. I have learned more as a homeschool mom than I did all through my own years in grade school, jr. high and high school. College was a big boost, but I was mostly focused on writing, art and art history. Now poetry is something dd and I can learn together and appreciate. These resources will help us both tremendously.

Blessings to all. Your input has been awesome!

TTC is not just for high school. It goes from elementary on up. I'm doing it w/ 3rd and 6th graders. Just the basics....protagonist, antagonist, conflict, resolution.

I think it's called Deconstructing Penguins. :D It's an excellent start to literary analysis.

I know you want free resources (don't we all!), but I spent very little money on a used teacher text for literature http://www.amazon.com/Glencoe-Literature-Course-2-Teachers/dp/0078779839. I only buy the TE because it's exactly like the student text with the addition of teacher notes around the edges. The book I bought was a 7th grade text, and it had poetry (with all the info you need to teach the literary elements/meaning, etc.) from poets like Robert Frost, Langston Hughes, Walt Whitman, Poe, etc. I use the text when we are between novels for exposure to nonfiction, essays, short stories, memoirs, poetry, etc.
