mo2
How do I keep my clothes from getting so stiff? Most people say to throw them in the dryer for 5 minutes after you take them off the line, but I no longer HAVE a dryer, so obviously this won't work for me. Any other suggestions? Melissa in Australia
I have never had a dryer. I only get stiff clothes if they have been in the rain. I like it when the towels get stiff. nice and scratchy. Maybe your washing machine doesn't spin out enough water??
In The Great White North
American (Whirlpool, Maytag, etc) top-loading washers don't spin out nearly as much water as the European front-loaders (Bosch, Asko, etc). So it depends on your washer. I usually run a second spin cycle (Asko) to get rid of even more water. The only thing that produces "soft" clothes on the line for me is a good breeze. Mandamom
dryer in about a year. My experience has been to add a small amount of liquid softener to the wash makes a difference. I just use the cheap stuff. I just put the liquid softener in the machine when I'm adding the detergent.
Lucy in Australia
We have a dryer, but it's rarely used - I usually can't justify the cost of the electricity  I've found adding 1/2 cup of vinegar to the rinse helps with stiffness. Also, as previously mentioned, spinning out as much water as possible. The heavy-duty cycle on my machine makes quite a difference because it gets the clothes far less water-logged at the end. GreenKitty
Possibly a bit of fabric softener in the wash. Though we use vinegar. I do know some that mix it in a spray bottle with water and spray it on the clothing as it's hanging. I haven't done that though.
Guest Virginia Dawn
I've tried vinegar, and the "snap" before they go on the line. I still get stiff clothes. I have a top loader, so I'm going to to try the extra spin cycle today and see how that works.
