Pam L in Mid Tenn
Ds and I were having a conversation about tomorrow's PSAT. Is it better to GUESS an answer or leave that question UNANSWERED? Thanks!
creekland
They gain one point (not final score - that's based upon points) for each correct answer and lose a quarter point for each incorrect answer except for the free response answers on the one math section. I told my guy to guess if he has it down to two choices. I told him to leave it unanswered if he has no idea or can only eliminate one possibility. Edited October 11, 2011 by creekland forgot the free response section has no penalty, so fixed my answer.
Gwen in VA
The prep books my kids have worked through have generally suggested answering if you can eliminate one answer. I have bumped into the theory that it is always better to guess, and I have even had a mathematically-inclined person "prove" it to me, but I'm not quite there yet. Running the race
The official PSAT guide says it is better to guess if you can eliminate one answer. Always guess on the free response math section.

Miss Marple
I told my guy to guess if he has it down to two choices. I told him to leave it unanswered if he has no idea or can only eliminate one possibility. This is what we are doing as well. After going through the practice test, I think the boys are convinced that they are not good guessers :) So we walked through those they missed and worked to eliminate 2 answers. Some of the questions they discovered that they really had no idea on - those are better to leave blank.
kiana
It is mathematically better to guess if you can eliminate at least one answer.
