HSing...AndLovin'It
A warning regarding Wikipedia. There is EXPLICIT and GRAPHIC s**ual content on there that goes beyond the standard what it is and anatomy. Articles related to content of the pornography "industry" such as “actsâ€, positions, etc - all with x rated pictures, mostly computer drawn but very realistic. I would never let a child on there without being by their side the whole time. Children can be very curious once they reach a certain age. I know many parents are very careful when it comes to internet usage but may not realize that this type of explicit and unsavory content is available to children on an "encyclopedia" site. Internet sites can be blocked by filtering software but I don’t know if you can block content from a site you’re on. Just a heads up. Guest
Thank you for taking the time to post the warning. I too have come across this issue and always make sure my child (he is still young mind you ;)) just goes into specific sites we allow him to. Bumping for you :). WIS0320
I've been personally shocked by seeing content on Wikipedia that I didn't intend to see. Wikipedia links constantly to help users get to related content, which is fine, but I clicked once being curious about something linked that I wasn't familiar with and I got a shock when the page loaded! I agree, no Wiki use without an adult right there!

As it is, our children are never on the computer, except for the oldest, who practices her math facts. And that is it!

Wiki is an okay place to get started with some general information, but it absolutely should not be used as a source in papers in any way and any links are going to be as suspect as anything you find on the web. I was giving my writing class students the usual "no Wikipedia" speech last week, and one of the students volunteered that he had once used it a source and all of the information was wrong, and he received a bad grade because of it. It was so nice to have someone else (not the mean teacher) share that. :D

I don't ike it myself but have occasionally let students begin research with Wiki, but, according to the contest rules, they can't use it. Most of my students already knew that it could be edited by anyone at any time.
kubiac
I've been a Wikipedia editor/admin since 2003 and I don't have anything to add about the scandalous side of it, but as far as it being a research resource, my two cents are: Don't use Wikipedia as a source; DO use Wikipedia as a project. Instead of having your kids write a research paper in isolation, have them pick a Wikipedia article on either the English-pedia or the Simple English-pedia and have them add improvements and additional information, including research citations!
