Iamblessed
My 9th gr child could use some help with his spelling. Is there something I could use that would help him to improve? I am going to use AAS with his younger siblings but I don't think he would like that very much. Any suggestions? Thanks :001_smile:
atozmom
Here is a thread that mentioned Uncovering the Logic of English, which really looks interesting. Other programs I have heard mentioned with older students - Apples Daily Spelling Drills, Megawords, Sequential Spelling, and The ABCs and All Their Tricks. AAS has a forum if you do not know about it already, The ChatterBee. Using AAS with older kids has been discussed many times. If you are already planning on using it for your younger children, your 9th grader could do it at a more accelerated pace.
Quad Shot Academy
I had a similar question earlier and some of the other suggestions I got were: Rod and Staff Spelling (click on the books to see samples) Phonetic Zoo I still haven't decided. :tongue_smilie:
Greta Lea
Megawords is going to focus on more complicated multisyllable words. I'd work through Apples, then move to MW.
JudoMom
Sequential Spelling for Adults is what I would use.
EKS
Sequential Spelling for Adults is what I would use. This is what we are using here. My son is in 10th grade and we are now in the second book.
Book Nut
JudoMom & EKS: Why Sequential Spelling for adults? My 15 yo ds is a terrible speller & is dyslexic. His reading skills are finally "normal", but his speeling still is way behind. Will this help him and why? Thanks for the feedback?
Elizabeth in WA
We are using The Spell of Words for remedial spelling. I have the student book, teacher's manual and spaulding phonogram cards. The first lesson has gone well and I have high hopes for the program, but we are not far enough in yet to give results. :)
heart'sjoy
SS was developed for dyslexics. One method of implementation is to test and just work through the areas that need work. I haven't done this. I just looked at it to see if it would speed us up. For us I chose skipping some words. From what I read you can test your student, pay one-time 25 dollar membership, download the word lists, and make up your own word lists for the areas that need work. There are telephone numbers for advice on which program would fit your student best on the web site. http://www.avko.org/Essays/customizing_ss.html Just laying out info. Again I haven't used this method of implemntation. We've only used the homeschool version 1-5 so far.
