FrogMom5
Are you looking for a particular age group or everything considered children's books? You have a good start on your list already. Have you looked at the Baldwin project? She's making older children's books available online. I really admire how organized you are. I wish I could be more like you but that's not going to happen anytime soon. :tongue_smilie: I'll gather some titles together and post for you later. We love to buy old books so I know we have some that should be free online. Denise
Satori
Yep, I'm aware of the Baldwin Project and all kinds of great places to find free ebooks and audiobooks. I just wanted to make sure I had all I could loaded up on my Kindle iPad - no matter what your preferred place to get them. :) This list is to be a list of the best children's classics for grades K-8 that are not-to-miss books. If I listed every single free book available, that might get overwhelming. And it didn't take long for me to type up the list, I just went down my Kindle list and typed out every book that seemed to fit in this list. JumpedIntoTheDeepEndFirst
Any ideas on the quality of these titles? Too often the free books have sections mistyped or are just of very poor quality. I'd love to know which are actually good and usable versions (and how to identify them from the others). Satori
I'm not listing any specific versions, I like to shop around, download samples, and find the version with the best quality. I prefer interactive table of contents and of course good formatting. So far the books we've read have been great! I could link to quality versions, but that would take some time for me to check out all the possibilities, and it would only be kindle versions. FrogMom5
I'm pulling from some of the compilations series and readers we have in the house. Here's some ideas to consider: 1. Tom Brown's School Days - Thomas Hughes 2. The Pied Piper of Hamlin - Robert Browning 3. The Discontented Miller - Oliver Goldsmith 4. Heidi - Johanna Spyri Um, I have to stop for a few minutes to take care of my dd. As I find a few more, I'll post them. Denise
FrogMom5
Ok, I'm back. Here's a couple more: 1. The Story of Babar the Little Elephant - Jean De Brunhoff (not sure if this series is free yet, but it's close) 2. Pipkin - S. Forst (we're reading this for tea time and the boys think it's hilarious) If I come across any more, I'll let you know. Denise

stripe
I downloaded Winnie the Pooh. Not sure what's the story with it as I saw it on a list as not being in the public domain but I found a free epub version on the App Store? Also the colored fairy books. Oh, never mind, you got that. stripe
Er, it's coming up as $10.99 at iBooks, not sure what the story was...I guess it was some bargain special. Sorry.
FrogMom5
I would think you could find free versions of the King Arthur stories, Robin Hood, the Greek Myths and so on. Are the Edgar Allen Poe stories old enough to be free yet? They are great for middle schoolers. Books like Frankenstein - Mary Shelley(?), The Turn of the Screw - Henry James, Jane Eyre - can't think of the author even though I know who it is, darn it. Anyway, those are all good books for middle schoolers and they are all or mostly old enough to be free by now. Just a note - Turn of the Screw is a ghost story. There's nothing gory or graphic in it, but it will scare the pants off you. I couldn't sleep for a week after my son and I read it. He slept fine but I couldn't. It's written in a style similar to Jane Eyre and is really a wonderful story, just scary. I wish I could be of more help. I do hope you can compile a good list for your kindle. Satori
I have Winnie the Pooh loaded up in iBooks which I never use. I loved that it was in color. Perhaps it was a freebie at the time? Thanks everyone for chiming in, I will add these! We've been hiding out in our basement all afternoon because it's been so dreadfully hot today and we have no AC. freerange
Where did you find LOTR? I've not seen any for under £ 10.
Satori
freerange - My daughter and I were listening to the Hobbit tonight coincidentally and I realized I had paid for all the Tolkien books (Kindle version). I took it off, thanks for the reminder!
