homeschoolof1
Hello all! I'm homeschooling my dd this fall in a mixture of first and second grade. Her dad wants me to find learning standards or benchmarks that schools use to make sure she learns everything public school kids learn. I've searched and searched, and I can't understand the language used in the standards I've found. My state (Illinois) website is one of the most confusing. I just want a checklist for math, science, language arts, etc. Any tips on where to find one? I found an amazing website a couple of months ago, but of course I wasn't on my computer, and now I can't find it.
Momtoamayalilal2
Try this: http://www.worldbook.com/typical-course-of-study-grade-1-curriculum-guide.html
black_midori
Sad, but true - I use "What your XX Grader Should Know" :) Not as a curricula, of course, just as a guide to knowing about what a reasonable group of people believes a First Grader (or 2nd!) should know... at least it gets me to ask "oh, did I cover that?". homeschoolof1
I have "What your First Grader Needs to Know" and I like it, but I'm really looking for more of a checklist.
MorganClassicalPrep
:bigear: I've looked at the What Your XX Grader Should Know books also, and they are interesting, but I'd love to see a "checklist" of average knowledge/skills for a certain grade child. nono
Here's where the NJ Standards are, broken out by subject area. Maybe that can help until someone can give you better information for your region.
nov05mama
I reference this for generalized 'what your child should be learning' for each grade level and then I will also reference my states curriculum standards website as well. Not sure where you are located, but if you just google "your state curriculum standards", you should get a few websites to come up :) This website is great for a general overview though... http://www.worldbook.com/typical-course-of-study.html
Carpe
It looks like they have one pdf for each subject rather than one for each grade. Odd. http://www.isbe.state.il.us/ILS/Default1.htm on the right hand side. I only glanced at the first one. It is a checklist though it's entirely in educationese. There are a few websites that explain educationese to homeschooling parents who need to report, but I imagine they'd be helpful for deciphering it as well. One collection of links can be found at http://www.thehomeschoolmom.com/teacherslounge/educationese.php
homeschoolof1
I'm looking over the sites now. Carpe, thanks for the link for explaining educationese!
Mommy22alyns
I've found the book Home Learning Year by Year by Rebecca Rupp to be extremely helpful. And not in "educationese" either! ;)
morosophe
Are you a Christian? (Wow, now I feel like I'm about to invite you to a revival meeting. Weird.) If you are, you might be interested in What Your Child Needs to Know When: According to the Bible, According to the State, by Robin Sampson. If you aren't, it might only irk you. I don't actually own this resource, and the fact that it seems to be selling a particular teaching approach is a little worrying. Still, it's garnered all favorable reviews on Amazon so far, and it does sound like exactly what you're asking for. (Assuming you're willing to pay for a book. And that you're interested in a Christian approach, of course.)
poetic license
I use the K12 scope and sequence for general guidelines (esp since DS may be enrolled in their virtual academy). They are easy to use and clear. http://www.k12.com/courses/k-8-courses/downloadable-k-8-course-information/
wy_kid_wrangler04
This website is great for a general overview though... http://www.worldbook.com/typical-course-of-study.html :iagree: This is a very good one that goes year by year from pre-k- 12th grade
