  1. I like the wildflowers one, but I need a weekly format, or boxes I can check off, etc. We have approximately 14 subjects scheduled each day, in 10-20 minute blocks. Subjects include: math, science/nature, AM history/World history, literature (I read), elocution, dictation, Copywork, geography, poetry, drawing, Bible, etc. This will be my second year Homeschooling, and we're expecting a baby in December. I need something flexible, and that I can hand to someone else if they need to teach her.
  2. I've tried donna young, and pretty much everything that turns up on a Google search. I really want to make my own in a similar manner to HOD. Any suggestions on a program to use, or a website experienced Homeschoolers know about that won't turn up in a search right away. I also searched the threads here and looked at all the links.
  3. I was multi-tasking when I wrote that. Sorry! She's listened to and enjoyed: A Little Princess, Pinocchio, Little House on the Prairie Series, and Narnia series. She's read the Josefina American Girl books (but has no interest in the others), the first Magic Treehouse and the first Junie B. Jones (and has zero desire to read more of either series). I read the first chapter of Harry Potter to her last night, and she seems interested, but I don't know if that's the direction I want her going just yet... I'm also trying to avoid "fluff" at all costs. Thanks!
  4. My daughter is starting second grade this fall. She's reading at a fourth grade level, but I've had a hard time transitioning her to read chapter books. She loves listening to them on CD, but she won't read any on her own. Any suggestions where/how to start?
  5. As for only child, all the books I've read have broken it down by family member. I feel some small allowance should be tied to chores, but I don't know what chores to use and what a reasonable allowance amount is. I never had chores growing up, and I was asking the same questions at her age, and I was also an only child. She's asking why she doesn't have chores, how can she get an allowance, etc.
  6. My dd is six, and all her life I've struggled with picking chores for her. She's helped wash dishes, fold laundry, scrub the floors, etc. But I really feel I should give her set chores and an allowance. Does anyone know any good books or websites on picking jobs for an only child?
  7. Please forgive me if I misspelled that! I've been researching forever, especially Charlotte Mason, and I just found it this morning. Has anyone used it for k-3? What's it like? Thanks so much!
  8. Sheldon, I don't suppose you'd be interested in selling any of yours when you're finished? ;) That looks like the best one I've seen so far!
  9. Thanks for all the advice! I'm kinda confused by the Awana at Home. Does anyone know how that works?
  10. I decided to go it alone for first grade, but now I'm trying to find a program for grades 2-8. I just have one daughter. This year she's finishing Mother Stories of the Old & New Testament, Exploring Creation with Astronomy, MEP Year 1, and she's read most of the history books required for grades k-2 for MFW and HOD. She's also copied 1-2 sentences at a time. I don't want to do MFW because I don't like the fact that you have to do everything in order, we do have some days where she picks what she does and I want to give her that freedom occasionally. I like HOD, but I'm kinda confused about the prices. SonLIght is too expensive (and I don't understand what we should order), and ABEKA looks too "easy". Is there something else out there? She's reading at about a third to fourth grade reading level.
  11. I'm afraid of doing the Veggie Tales since dd Sunday school spent 3 years on it (no joke). HOP looks like she might outgrow it quickly. If I had another kid I would definitely try it. We are in a REALLY small town and the AWANA program down the block is the only one for miles around. I will be looking at the Mailbox and doorpost programs though!
  12. We decided to keep dd out of Awana because the time didn't work for us. Schedules have changed and now we can't attend church as often as I'd like. I'm trying to find something we can use at home that would encourage character development and scripture memorization. It needs to be easy to fit in the day, but not break the bank. Any tips? Dd is almost 7, starting second grade this summer/fall.
  13. It's been my dream to homeschool for as long as I can remember. I put my daughter in private school last year due to scheduling conflicts, and instantly regretted the decision. This year I have the time and curriculum to homeschool, and my daughter is as rebellious as possible. She wants to spend time with her friends, and thought school was fun. We've divided her day into half-hour chunks for each subject, and let her spend any extra time she has playing, but I don't know if that will help. Any other suggestions?
  14. I've been using the webiste anoldfashionededucation.com for years, and this week I've had no success typing in the url or searching for it. Does anyone know what happened?
