AuntieM
DS will graduate spring '12. So we will start applying this summer/fall. I thought I understood that we may have to submit a FAFSA for any scholarship applications. But when DH looked at the FAFSA web site, there not an option listed for the college 2012-13 year. What are we supposed to do? Is there a concise web site that simplifies this process (NOT the official FAFSA page!)?
babysparkler
My nephew is graduating this Spring and filled out his FAFSA in January of this year.
Kimm in WA
It opens up on Jan. 1st in the year your student will be going to college (in the Fall). Apply early for the best chance at good aid. Kimm
Jane in NC
You are going to enter income, savings, etc. that represent your 2011 snapshot. That is why you cannot enter FAFSA data now. FAFSA does have a worksheet that will give you an idea of what kinds of data you will supply. You might try a couple of the free online FAFSA calculators to get a look now at your EFC (Expected Family Contribution) if you have not done that already. Another thing: if your son is applying to highly competitive schools, you or he will need to fill out the CSS Profile (College Board site). This can be done next fall. Be prepared to have your mind blown. Jane
K-FL
Another FAFSA point--do your taxes as soon as you can! Both you & ds, as that info will be needed and filed to make it "official." You can do estimated, but the final needs to say you have filed.
Kimm in WA
FYI, you can do the FAFSA on Jan. 1 with estimated info and then update, but the date entered (reported to colleges) will still be Jan. 1. Kimm in WA
AuntieM
Jan 1 of 2012? So nothing now, even though we start applying this fall? Thanks for all the info so far. Jane, I am not quite ready to look at your recommended site yet. Must steel my mind first!
Photo Ninja
Apply to colleges in Fall, 2011. File FAFSA in Jan - Feb, 2012. Earlier is usually better because some colleges give out aid money based on the FAFSA filing date.
AuntieM
Okay, that's what I needed to know. Thanks!
