How do you use your Ipad for school?

Recommended Posts

Well, for the big boys we use the astronomy app, a speed math facts practice app, and for reading the Apologia science cd-rom. Various other things I'm not thinking of either.

For the 4yr old we use it a lot. The Teach Me Kindergarten app, a wonderful flash cards app, an additional math app (Teach Me has math in it), counting app and even the various "fun" apps. (Umizoomi, Super Why, etc)

Even for the big boys there are several education things that can be used. We just haven't used them. Look in the App Store under the educational category. The elements app and astronomy app are both wonderful.

We use ours extensively for school, but that's because we scanned 500 books and we needed a device that displays color books well. We do use some apps for school sometimes, but not that much. It's primarily a color ereader for us, at least during school hours.

I have been researching this as well. So far I've added Math Bingo for my older kids, Super Why, Park Math HD, Grover Monster, and Cat Lite (Cat in the Hat) for my preschooler.

My friend uses a flash card app and supposedly there is i a way to make your own flash cards. She uses Latina Christiana and has made flash cards for it. I need to figure out how to do this.

Also there is the Kindle app which makes available a lot of free books. There are so many that I haven't yet figured out which ones to download.

I hope more people reply and we can find the good apps more quickly. Thanks!

Amira,

I am curious how did you are able to use the Ipad with all your scanned books. How did you download it to your ipad?

Caryn

I use the goodreader app. I just transferred them to the iPad using that app. It was pretty simple and goodreader is definitely the best 99 cents we've spent on the iPad. Scanning the books was a huge project, but it's been so worth it.

Jessica...I'm curious...w/out the CD drive, how do you use the iPad for the Apologia science? This intrigues me!

My husband downloaded and saved the cd-roms on his iMac. Then he plugged in my iPad and downloaded them there. Not everything works perfectly but really well. I keep the actual cd-roms with my iMac or MacBook and when we need a live link that might not be working or video we step over to it. Because it was so big, he saved the original stuff in pieces and transfers them for me as needed. He does it with whatever Teaching Company course I'm going through at the time as well. Pick up a set of Chill Pills or Tweekers and you can hear much better.

This week we've used:

BrainPop-free movie every day

YouTube-This week I used it to look for videos of the animals we were reading about. We've viewed videos of hedgehogs, whales and dolphins, pandas, and scorpions.

Wikipanion-This week we've used it to look up animal information.

In the past we've used:

Google Earth and Nations with some geography lessons

Doodle Buddy for math equations

ArtPuzzleLite and ArtPuzzles

My big boys read tons of books on their ipads, and also have downloaded many strategy or imo beneficial games like Sudoku, Catan, Set, chess, mah jong, etc. (They are still limited in their "game time" but I love when they spend the time on things like that.)

They also have used the notepad feature to take notes while reading, which works for them b/c they can go into a quiet room and focus instead of having to be in the middle of everything at one of the schoolroom computers.
