Jyniffrec
Does anyone know of any good books on this topic? I found this but it seems to be for the grammar stage. I can't find anything else.
Capt_Uhura
I've checked out a series but I can't put my finger on it. IT's a history of science series. Darn I can't find it.
Jyniffrec
It's not the Hakim series, is it? There isn't a viewable table of contents on Amazon. Thank you for posting, though, because I used the words from your post to search on Amazon and found the Hakim series. I had forgotten about these. I don't think it has the Egyptians, though. SilverMoon
We had the book linked in the OP last year with VP's OT&AE. I remember it being a pretty slim volume. My logic stage kid used it as a springboard for more research (internet and encyclopedia mainly), and wrote an outline with it using each chapter title as a main point. Capt_Uhura
No it's not the Hakim series. It is an old and out of print series. Gosh darn, I had a book to preview and sent it back to the library b/c we weren't ready for that time period yet. We had Technology in Ancient China, perhaps that is what I'm thinking of. OH I think know what I'm thinking of. I don't think it's what you're looking for. It's the Story of Science series. It takes a topic and traces that topic through history from ancients to modern times. I've purchased two of them through Amazon Marketplace. ONe if Miracle of Immunity and Mystery of Gravity. There is one on Earth Science. I believe there are about 6 books in the series.
mcconnellboys
Here's a book that some here used last year (swimmermom3, I believe, used it): http://www.amazon.com/Ancient-Science-Time-Traveling-World-Exploring-History-Making/dp/0471215953 It's not strictly about Egypt.... I like this series: http://www.amazon.com/Science-Ancient-Egypt-Past/dp/0531159159 This one has some activities included, if you can find it cheaply: http://www.amazon.com/dp/0817248757?tag=historyforkids&link_code=as2&creativeASIN=0817248757&creative=374929&camp=211189 Here it is more cheaply: http://www.alibris.com/search/books/qwork/6587176/used/Technology%20in%20the%20time%20of%20ancient%20Egypt Here are some free, online activities for you: http://fi.edu/learn/tut/k-4/index.html http://fi.edu/learn/tut/5-8/index.html Here's an online resource with a twist: http://www.crystalinks.com/egyptscience.html

HappyGrace
We used the one in the OP and it was okay for an overview, but we also do other sci in co-op. I didn't find others for logic stage when I was planning last summer, but I wasn't looking that hard since we already have some sci. The Hakim Story of Science (Aristotle Leads the Way) does have some Egyptian, but it is brief. (But the book is TOTALLY worth buying if you will continue on in Ancients!) http://joyhakim.com/aristotle.html

I like this series: http://www.amazon.com/Science-Ancient-Egypt-Past/dp/0531159159 I did use the first book listed along with the Science in Ancient...series that Regena linked for last year when we studied ancient history. I set aside one day a week for the History of Science and a possible experiment or activity that relates to the reading. We are continuing with that process this year utilizing Hakim's books and the Technology in World History series. It is an enjoyable aside to our science studies, but not the major focus. I can't find anything else. Jennifer, I forgot to add that you should check the book out that you linked from the library if you haven't already. The material is more than appropriate for middle schoolers unless you have an advanced science reader. I think 4th to 7th grade would be a comfortable range. Sorry, Jane. That $400 price is ridiculous. A while back, there was a sale and the set was miraculously $35.:tongue_smilie: If you can be patient, I would imagine there will be a few used sets for sale on the board in the next year or so.;)
Guest
NOVA had a show on a team of scientists who attempted to build a (very) small version of a pyramid using techniques and materials available to the ancient Egyptians. We got it free from our library. I think the series is called Secrets of Ancient Empires. When you get to the middle ages, the one on the catapults is the best! Jyniffrec
Here's an online resource with a twist: http://www.crystalinks.com/egyptscience.html I have a friend who is really into this. She and her friend (a Scientologist) are supposedly writing a book about it. I have always thought of this approach almost as a conspiracy theory or hidden knowledge approach to Egyptian history. I'm not saying the website is incorrect (I haven't looked at it that closely), I've just never run across it in any other place than from my friend. I think the reviews on Amazon scared me away from it as well, but since so many here like it here I think I may use it.
