Heather in AL
In rooting around in my pantry, I came across two items that have expired. Do I use/eat or toss? An unopened box of powdered milk (to use in the bread machine) "Best before Jan 2010". And an unopened box cake mix (bag still sealed tight). "Best by May 08, 2010". What says the Hive? cindergretta
Personally, for me, no on the milk, yes on the cake. JMHO
Brilliant
Yes on the cake mix; just use it up soon. Maybe on the milk...do you have a recipe you can put this in soon? Most expiration dates are for freshness/best taste; it doesn't mean the ingredients turn to poison on that date.
Susan in KY
Yes for both. Life in Africa taught me that expiry dates are often (not always) just suggestions. imo, the cake mix is more likely to go rancid (from the fat content) than the dry milk, which can last an extraordinarily long time. Either should be good at least a year past the date on the package, unless you stored them in a shed outdoors and they suffered extreme temperature changes. Meat, not so much. And medicine loses 10% of its efficacy by it's expiry date. :) FWIW, Susan
Tylianna
CHECK THE CAKE MIX FOR BUGS!!!!!!!! :tongue_smilie: Sorry for the caps... I took a lick of cake batter and found a "treat" in it... I couldn't eat cake for months!!!
Margo out of lurking
I think they would both be fine, but I would make a point to use them soon. But honestly, if I could afford to toss both, I think I would do that instead.
Rosie_0801
Equal portions of cheapo peanut butter and milk powder makes nice playdough. Rosie
Heather in AL
Thanks for the help ladies. The powdered milk got tossed. A full box wouldn't get used up that fast, and it's already just *so* old. I know nothing about powdered milk, so I figured I would ask. Rosie, while I think the playdough idea sounds really neat, my kids are too old. Once upon a time, though, that would have been a bit hit. Neither child ever liked to color or draw, but they both LOVED playdough! I haven't looked at the cake mix yet. If I'm feeling brave, I may use it, but I'm thinking I'll toss it. Bummer.... it is a chocolate cake mix, too. It feels wrong not only because it's wasteful, but it's chocolate. :tongue_smilie: Thanks again! cindergretta
Given that it is chocolate, I would probably toss it b/c finding bugs in it is gonna be hard... :tongue_smilie:
