Starting MCT skipping Island

This year we are doing FLL 4 and WWE3. I'm happy with both.

 

I was planning on buying MCT Island level to start up in Jan. However, now I'm rethinking. I'm not too keen on spending more money on LA when we already have it for this academic year.

 

For 5th grade I will need something because FLL does not go past level 4. I will continue with WWE though.

 

So will ds miss anything grossly important by skipping Island level and starting in the Town level?

I don't think so. DS9 is doing Town this year after doing Island last year, and he regularly sighs and says, "I already KNOW this" because so much of it has been covered before. So far he's actually finding the writing assignments LESS challenging in Town--which is more a matter of personality than technical difficulty; the Island assignments tended to be very open-ended, and he likes concrete.

I have not had ds do any creative open ended work. I think he would hate it. I'm glad the writing assignments are more concrete in Town.

I think Town would be a great level to start a 5th grader who has had grammar exposure already.

No, I don't think so for a child with a decent understanding of the parts of speech. My DD started in "town" and was fine with it.

We skipped Island and went to Town for my 10 year-old, Voyage for my 12 year-old, neither of whom studied a very robust grammar program beforehand. It's working great.

I think you'll be just fine to begin in Town.
