mom31257
I have a friend who has offered to let me use her BJU Algebra 1 text and TM set. Free is always nice! I haven't had a chance to look through it, but does anyone know of definite negatives to the program? I have a math degree, so I feel totally comfortable with teaching it to dd. I just have been out of school so long, that what I think is good for Algebra 1 might not be anymore.
southcarolinamom
It's a good solid math program. My ds used it (and the other BJU math books) without problems, and scores very high on the math portion of the Stanford Achievement testing. My dd uses Teaching Textbooks Algebra I, she needs a different method of teaching. :D
Michelle in AL
I used it with both my dds and thought it was very thorough.
klmama
It's supposed to be an excellent and thorough program. The only drawbacks I've heard are that it's hard to transition into it from other programs and it's very teacher-intensive. With your math background, though, that may not be as much a problem for you as for some of us!
Robin in DFW
now mind you, I'm not speaking from experience, but I just read this earlier today. The upper levels leave out instruction in both the teacher book and student book that is only on the dvd's.
mom31257
Thanks for all the responses. I am comfortable teaching any curricula for Algebra, in fact, I can't wait! I did want to make sure there wasn't something negative about it I might not know.
momtotkbb
We used it for Alg I for dd. I thought it was a complete program and enjoyed teaching it - I didn't use the DVD's. DD's only complaint was that the student text was visually cluttered --she likes clean lines and spaces:)
Guest TheBugsMom
My two oldest sons used the BJU Algebra and both did well. Neither one needed the DVD's because the lessons are written in such a way the student can understand what the new skill being taught is. The Teacher's manuals where only used for the answers. chalkboard
Interesting. Two people can have the opposite view of the same thing. While a previous poster said her dc thought the page layout was cluttered, one thing that jumped out to me about the BJU Alg. 1 book, as compared to the Chalkdust Alg. 1 book, was that the page layout seemed easier to read and uncluttered. The print is bigger with more white space. I'm not a math person and thought that the BJU Alg. 1 book provided good instruction that even I could navigate. If you are a math teacher, I can't see that you'd have any problems with it. No one program has it all, but with your skills, I'm sure you could compensate in any number of ways if you see something lacking here or there.
