mombygrace
has any one used these for young readers? My ds is 4 and would like to read them. He saw them and wants to read the series but I am not familiar with them. Are they appropriate? Thanks?
FriedClams
They're great old-fashioned boy saves the day kind of books. We're very conservative and my kids loved them.
Beach Mom
They're great old-fashioned boy saves the day kind of books. :iagree:My littlest was an early reader and he enjoyed reading every book in this series.
ladydusk
My boy doesn't read yet and his Billy and Blaze books are his favorites to look at (the pictures are wonderful). The stories are great, too, when I or his sister read them to him. I don't know how easy/difficult the reading is though ... they aren't really "readers" I don't think. Monkey Island Academy
My ds6 has also enjoyed reading this series. He read the first couple books at age five and will be continuing with the series this school year.
mombygrace
Thanks everyone. I would get him a few and see how he does with them. He likes books like curious George, dr. Seuss, non fiction dk readers etc and is into cowboy and horses.
JoJosMom
I was a horse crazy kid and loved them. My horse crazy, early reader DD loved them, too! They were some of the first that we used for chapter readers, I think in K. The other day (she just turned 8) she sat down and read them all again. She still loves them. annlaura
My older son loves these too! We just reenacted one today while out on a nature trail. :)
parias1126
My DD8 loves this series of books. She is a horse lover, found these a few weeks ago and hasn't put them down yet. She is very picky, doesn't enjoy reading because she had some vision issues we just recently discovered, but will read these without being asked to read. I was amazed at what these have done for her. bbrandonsmom
I like these. Ds (5) is able to read what he knows and will try to sound out the other words. I have a few horse books from when dh was a kid-Little Black a Pony and one called Doodlebug. Both about black ponies and around the same level as the Billy Blaze books I'd guess. I haven't been able to find many horse books for boys for early readers. The next ones I know of are the Black Stallion and Misty books. And then Saddle club for girls. I think those are more 3/4th grade though?
Kirch
My ds loves them. I like them because they're a little more sophisticated (longer, smaller text, bigger vocabulary, etc.) than many picture books or even higher level early readers. They're a good segue into early chapter books.
tjlcc
My boys love them too. Good for reading aloud or as readers. Check and see if your library has copies to test them out.

Guest TheBugsMom
Great books for both boys and girls. Another series along that line is the Jim Forrest series. These are progressive readers that have a great storyline. They are out of orint but Ebay has them all the time.
