HollyDay
Dd is studying the writing of the constitution in 9th grade at the moment. I'm very tempted to get The Federalist Papers for her to read. But, I did not read them until college. Is it too much too soon to go through this book at this level?
Cedarmom
I would do selections from them-not all of them. I think it would be interestiing for her to read some of them.
bugs
I'm on a different computer than the one I normally use or I'd send you the limited list of the one's I am having my 9th grader read. You can google federalist papers for hs and you might get a nice list. Otherwise, if I remember tomorrow I'll jot them down for you if you like. FloridaLisa
I also suggest that you choose several of the key pieces, rather than reading all of them. They are actually very manageble for a 9th grader, though you may need to work through them line by line and paragraph by paragraph and put it into today's vernacular. We read Nos. 10, 51, 70 and 78 I believe. They are available online from many sources. HTH, Lisa Edited September 1, 2010 by FloridaLisa bad grammar! bugs
My dd will be reading 2, 9, 10,23, 39, 41, 47, 51, 70, 72, 78. I forget why I chose those, but it made sense at the time and I'm sticking with it :tongue_smilie:.
LauraQ
The Federalist Papers are included in Veritas Press's Omnibus III course as primary reading, and they intend it to be used about 9th grade.
Ida
Dh, professor of history and education, also reccommends only doing selections, but says you should also read selections from the anti-federalist papers at the same time in order to understand the full debate. Belacqua
There's an excellent book called Are We to Be a Nation (Richard Bernstein) that addresses the creation and ratification of the Constitution. If you're looking for some background on the Federalist Papers, it's a really good source.

I was going to say this. Dd took it last year and had no problems
