AMDG
DS 4 is working slowly through Phonics Pathways. He TOTALLY gets CVC words and can sound them all out. The only problem is that Phonics Pathways is BORING. Doodey reads about 6 six words and then is bored. I've used paper and pens, a marker board and chalk to make it more interesting. It's.just.not. Are there any workbook/worksheet style phonics books that would actually help Doodey with Phonics? Basically, I want the Phonics Pathways content in a more engaging format. Ideas? kchris
My kids all did Explode the Code. I don't know if it will be similar to the Pathways book.
krisandpaula
Both my kiddos LOVE Explode the Code workbooks. Book 1 starts with cvc words. My dd (4) is about half way through it and asks to work in it daily! :001_smile:
AMDG
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will definitely check it out. I'm glad that your kiddos liked it--pathways is just too dry for my four year old who is READY to read.
SilverMoon
I added a Plaid Phonics workbook (from MCP) for my one kid that really needed to do the exercises. They didn't coordinate precisely, but it worked out great just doing each book separately at it's own speed.
AMDG
So, for Explode the Code, what level would DS4 be? He knows all letter sounds, proper vowel sounds, and can sound out any CVC word. He has very little comprehension while reading though. He can read "Dad has a big red hat," but it doesn't mean anything to him (he's four...) I really don't want to frustrate him with learning and will take a very child-directed approach for the next two years (at least). Any idea? momofabcd
Abeka Letters and Sounds K works very will with phonics pathways. It is as close as you can get to same content.
twoxcell
I would start with book 1.
ElizabethB
Do a few words, do the rest with games! My game: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Phonics/concentrationgam.html Ideas for games with magnetic letters at the last paragraph of this page, you can also run relay races and scoop them out of a bucket and run back and make words: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/newstudents.html More games here, scroll down for games: http://www.catphonics.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/contents.htm
OleanderRain
MY daughter has been using Explode The Code for a couple of weeks now and she thinks it's fun. It's the subject she asks to work on first everyday! She knew all of the CVC words so we started with book 2. They are also inexpensive. Satori
Explode the Code fans here! Normally for a child that can easily read CVC words, I'd say start with ETC 2, but you said although he can read, he can't comprehend the words. So I suggest starting with ETC 1.
