mamamoon
hello~was wanting to add this to my 1st grade phonics curriculum~ and was puzzled by the books~i am not quite sure which book to get. i saw on the website that you can buy placement tests~don't really want to do that~ do i just look at samples and guess? book 1, 2??? she can read most 3 letter words, and i would say she knows the short vowel sounds, and has the silent "e" thing down. thanks in advance!! kokotg
I'd probably start with book 1. It may be fairly easy for her, but book 2 starts right in with consonant blends; I think it's better to have some practice with CVC words and build confidence than risk overwhelming her with longer words before she's ready. ETA: and if it IS easy for her, she can go through it very quickly and be ready to start book 2 within a couple of months.

There are only 11 lessons in Book 1 - all addressing the short vowel sounds. You could get through it very quickly if she gets it. I would think probably less than a month. I did ETC with my 4 year old DS last year and he was able to go through close to a lesson a day. We would do a lesson and then the next day, read books that reinforced the particular skill taught. dsmama
Just FYI -- the 1/2 books (1 1/2, 2 1/2, etc.) are for extra practice at that level. So, once your child finishes 1, she should move onto 2 unless she needs extra practice.
