Getting started with Latin, SSL or Prima Latina?

Recommended Posts

I decided to teach my two kids Latin together because I don't want to burn out myself teaching separately. They will be almost 6 and almost 8 when I start in the fall. So I am considering the three programs in the title. I read great reviews of GSL at amazon.com and great reviews of PL at homeschoolreviews.com. If I just want a gentle introduction of Latin to both kids starting this fall before any more serious study, which program should I use? And which one should follow? I would like to have a rough plan to follow.

How about GSL followed by Prima Latina and then Latina Christina? Or is SSL a better start?

Thanks for your suggestions!

I don't know anything about SSL, sorry... however we use PL here as an intro to Latin and it was very slow and gentle. I did it with my 9 y/o last year and my 8 y/o will do it this coming year. It was pretty easy for my 9 y/o so I'm sure your younger dc's wouldn't have any trouble. Very easy to teach as well. We pretty much just listened to the pronunciation CD and went from there.

DS9 will do Latina Christiana I this year. It looks to be a little more involved, but still very doable. It is simple and gets the job done! :D

We're halfway through SSL now, and while my 5 yr old LOVES it, I don't know that an 8 yr old wouldn't find it completely babyish. It does teach a lot of vocabulary and some basic grammar, but it's very much "listen to and sing the songs, point to pictures, circle pictures, trace (not even write-trace) words, and so on.
