:iagree: My kids LOVE GWG. It's a solid curriculum which is easily done independently.

 

:iagree: And it was the first thing kiddo learned to do independently. He loves getting it done as a "surprise" for me when I get home from work. I know he likes it (makes him feel capable) because he is eager to get to the next book. We are doing Books 1 and 2 in a single (second grade) year.

 

Pros:

Lays flat!

No distracting pictures!

Painless gain with gentle repetition

Not dumbed down (uses the real words for parts of speech)

Easy to plan, as each two-page section takes the same amount of time. (No "easy days" vs. "has to be split into two days")

 

Cons:

The proper names (usually names of children) in sample sentences are sometimes too unusual and non-phonetic. My son has learned to guess and move on, but he would "stick" on them at first, out of perfectionism. How many 7 year olds know a Moira (which is more phonetic if you say it in Great Britain)?
