Sports or music? Playoff baseball game or an orchestra concert?

Hunter is scheduled for both events at the same hour, on the same day. My husband wants him to participate in one, I want him to be in the other.

 

How do you decide? I don't mean which would you choose, but how do you go about making the decision?

 

We agreed that we would let Hunter choose, but I'm curious how this would work in other families.

I'd go with whichever I wanted him to be doing five years from now.

I'd do whichever one would miss him more. If his baseball team would be likely to lose without him, he'd play ball. If his orchestra would sound poor without him, he'd play his instrument. Both are "team" commitments, so I'd think in terms of the greater good.

I think a playoff game trumps a concert otherwise, the concert would win.

I would encourage my son to choose the playoff game because he is part of the team and this is an important game.

If they need him, he should go to the game. If he is not needed, he should go to the concert.

It has been an interesting conversation in our house tonight.

 

As it turns out, he'll probably be able to participate in both. My husband coaches the team and is a board member for the league. Because there will be at least three players missing for band and orchestra concerts he is making phone calls to get the game date changed to the following night.
