joyfulhomeschooler
We have been using horizons are just finishing up grd 1. I am thinking about doing Singapore next year. If it doesn't work I would like to be able to go back to Horizons. Has anyone ever done this and if so were you able to go back into the appropriate grade level or did you find your child behind after using singapore? Thanks
plain jane
I use both simultaneously so my situation is a bit different. I do find that they both seem to cover very similar topics each year (not necessarily the same time as SM is mastery and Horizons is spiral) and I can't think of any reason your dc would be behind if you were to switch back, especially from a grade 2 to 3 level. Also, a good portion of the Book 1 for each grade level in Horizons is review from the previous year so even if there was a topic or two that wasn't covered in SM, you'll be able to pick it up quickly enough and keep moving on with Horizons. :)
wy_kid_wrangler04
I was trying to decide between the two and I decided to do both. Now, we do math on our breaks through the year and through the summer also so it does stretch out. It is not too much. We love the mastery style singapore offers, and we LOVE the spiral from Horizons. But is just how we do math!!
joyfulhomeschooler
wy_kid_wrangler How do you manage both? I have thought about doing Horizons through the school year and then the B book from sinapore in the summer months but don't know how this would work out. Do you do both all year long and just alternate days?
nd293
When we switched from Horizons to Singapore I found we were behind in skills (although not content) and needed to review a year. So instead of using the "full" Singapore with textbooks and workbooks, I chose a couple of the stand-alone workbooks, making sure I chose ones that had fully worked solutions so we could figure out the Singapore approach as we went. Doing something like that might work well if you wanted to combine both programmes. I bought directly from Singapore (SG Box) - I think the range of books is a little different from what the US supplier carries.
abbeyej
I have my kids do both. There are so few problems in Singapore, I don't find it difficult to fit both programs in. They have opposite strengths, so I find they complement each other well.
