  1. It absolutely does. Some days I actually wish my kids were less independent. It's bittersweet. I know it's good for them but I miss the younger years. Could you make a grid for them like MFW uses and print that out for them to read like a guide? Then they could be independent with whatever you use. Personally, I would be concerned that HOD might be too much with CC. We've never done CC, though, so i could be wrong.
  2. Are you referring to revtorev? RtR is resurrection to reformation. Just wanted to clarify before answering. We've loved using HOD. I'm really seeing how beneficial the increasing independence is in each guide.
  3. Are these still the editions that are being recommended? It looks like the online class is now using the 9th edition.
  4. We switched after 4th grade and it has gone well. We'll be doing the same with our daughter this coming year. There was an adjustment period though, and for that reason, I'm glad we did it earlier rather than later.
  5. I seem to keep hearing that about the Mr. Pipes book. Thanks. 😌
  6. Which ones would you skip and which would you not want to miss?
  7. After finishing horizons grade 4 math, my children tested into Saxon 7/6. Make sure when you finish horizons 3 you take the Saxon placement test.
  8. Thank you all so much for taking the time to add your input! I don't usually 'like' every single reply in a thread, but in this case every one of your responses were truly helpful. We will be mulling it over and checking into things before making a decision in April.
  9. Does anyone on here have experience with a charter school that pays for your curriculum and extracurricular activities, but you still home school your child... AT HOME? There is a new one starting up in our town and though it sounds like a good idea, we just can't find peace about joining. The pros on our list are more than the cons... still it just feels like a bad idea. I'm hoping to find people that have actually used one of these charter type schools, to tell me what the positives and negatives you found were. Or people who haven't used them, and why.
  10. Thank you all for your time and input. After reading the responses and knowing our son will go on to do more foreign language in the future, I am not going to do anything except keep plugging away at Latin. I'm not concerned at this point with whether or not FFL is worth a half credit, whole credit, or no credit at all. I was just confused as to how to go about awarding credit if it was worth one. It seems that it is pretty much up to the parents discretion as to award or not to award credit as long as it fits into the requirements for their state. I will try to research more on how this works in the future, but for now we will just enjoy learning a new language. :)

  12. I was recently informed and then read on the Memoria Press website that First Form Latin is worth 1 high school credit. Our 5th grade son is doing this program this year and we would love for him to be able to obtain this credit officially if possible. How do we go about doing this? Has anyone done it for a child that isn't yet in high school? This question has been posted in the K-8 board as well. I wasn't sure where to ask.

  14. I think the person who mentioned writing the answers in the book was referring to the workbook. We will sometimes do that if we're short on time. I'll go through the lesson with my son and then instead of doing the written assignments, he does the workbook page (s) that go with the lesson. I don't think it would be possible to write the answers in the actual textbook.
  15. Thank you all for your time in responding. You've confirmed my hesitation in starting First Form with my daughter. We have Latina Christiana since her older brother completed that last year, so we'll use that for her (4th grader) this year. Thanks again! :)
  16. Our co-op is doing First Form Latin this year and I'm just wondering how well a 4th grader with no prior Latin experience would do with this class? The teacher said it really just depends on the student and their understanding of grammar. This child has done FLL and then R&S English 3 last year. She is moving onto R&S 4 this year. She's a good, strong reader. What do you all think?
  17. Does anyone use BJU Spelling? It seems pretty pricey for a spelling curriculum (although AAS is a pricey one too) but looks so thorough. I was just curious about what others think of it. We've been using dictation and I think my son would enjoy a workbook program more.
  18. twoxcell, Why did I not know you lived so close to me? lol I just popped on over to your blog and realized that. We should get together some time. Would love to meet you.
  19. We did Adventures when my kids were those ages and it went really well. I felt it was pleanty as is and there was very little planning. You do have to cut out the timeline pics and prepare your timeline upfront. It was an enjoyable year even though we really tired of the state sheets.
  20. Horizons was working, but I wanted something with more instruction for those spots we got stuck on. The DIVE CDs with Saxon enticed me into going with them. ;) Now, I am giving far more instruction than I did with Horizons. Oh well, you live and learn, right? :) I hate to buy something else for this year though, so I think we will just stick it out with Saxon and reevaluate at the end of our school year. He did another lesson with me close by today and didn't miss one problem. He was so proud of himself and kept saying "I double checked every problem Mom, just like you told me to." So, maybe he just needed to be told to slow down.
  21. Thank you all for your advice. We sat together and did the lesson today. I didn't let him go more than two problems without us checking his work together to make sure he didn't miss anything. He had two problems out of all the odd ones that he had to do over. They were both simple mistakes such as putting 60 as an answer for 45+5. As soon as I said, this one isn't quite right, he looked at it, and immediately spotted the problem. It was the same sort of thing with the other missed problem. I'm thinking it is either the "rush factor" that many of you mentioned, or the lack of color and pictures to hold his attention. I've got some pondering to do. Thanks again for listening to my frustrations. :)
  22. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/493887-saxon-math-with-a-10yr-old-boy/ This explains our troubles we've been having with Saxon.
  23. So, if we are using a 3rd edition set of books for 6/5 could that be part of our issue with Saxon?
