cdrumm4448
say "cheeseburger" properly, but instead of "hamburger", still says "hamgerber"? She can say "burger". What's the deal?
Tangerine
It just seems easier to go from s to b than from m to b. I said it myself just to see, and it really feels easier on the mouth to say cheeseburger. My 5 year old says han gubber. I don't know if she can say cheeseburger or not... usetoschool
I think it is because saying the /b/ after the /m/ is too much work. We still call them hangamers because that is how all of my kids pronounced it and we just got in the habit.
Angie in VA
I don't know, but then, I put a bounty on the head of anyone who taught my dc the correct pronunciations of certain words. Cute ones I loved: Osso Depo = Office Depot Pinnie Wooh = Winnie the Pooh mark book = book mark All of these were self-corrected. I guess I held on to babyhood w/ mine, but it was fun. :) I'm sure she'll get it soon.
Suzanne in ABQ
It's probably just habit at this point. My kids carried some words over like that, until they could read. Once they sounded out the word, they realized their own error and self-corrected.
Tangerine
I just asked my 5 yo to say both words with identical results.
Chris in VA
I agree with all of the above, adding in that she probably sees them as distinct words, not "burgers" as part of ham-burger.
