Logic Stage: Astronomy or Earth Science first??

We're going to be doing Logic stage (6th grade) WTM.

 

It seems like SWB says to study Earth then Astronomy for science. My thoughts would be to study Astronomy first then earth. What is your thoughts on this? And could you explain?

Well for grammar stage this year, we did astronomy then earth science because that's the way my dd wanted to do it. Worked fine for us ;).

Personally, I don't really think it matters... we're going to study those two this summer and I guess I haven't really given it much thought... I think either one is fine....

But don't you think that if you studied astronomy first, the would have a better understanding of Earth?

We are doing astronomy and then earth science. I'm not worried about the sequence as my kids have had both subjects before. For the youngest children, I'd have a tendency to think it easier to start with what is most familiar and then head out into space. ;-) Easier to compare the atmosphere on mars if you've already learned the terminology with your own familiar planet first. ?? Probably just depends on how you choose to view it.

For grammar stage, we did earth then astronomy as that's how our curriculum was. When we cover it again in logic, my dd has requested we do astronomy first. She wants to move from the bigger picture of the universe to the smaller one of earth.

Which programs are you using for either Earth or Astromomy science?

I'm doing things the WTM way, so we're not really using a curriculum. We will be using "How the Earth Works", "How The Universe Works", "The Useborne Internet Linked Science Encyclopedia", among other books SWB recommended.

I mix in some astronomy throughout the year so that we can see different things in the sky at different seasons. So I'd tend to do about 6 weeks in the late summer/fall; 6 weeks in the winter; and 6 weeks in the spring.....

We will also be using the WTM's suggestion of "How the Earth Works" and "How The Universe Works". I will be working with my 8th grader and 3rd grader on this.

 

Can someone give me ideas on how to make it more challenging for my 8th grader. For example, would anyone have any references to quizzes or tests for these 2 books. I can make my own tests but if someone out there has done it, I'd appreciate any help!
