We have started all over the place, but if you're just beginning, allow yourself to wait until 1st grade. The program as whole is intended for such and you'll find benefit in waiting as the child develops.

One of the toughest things about this program is the waiting...wait until 1st

grade to start...wait until 2nd for them to read, read, read...but consider

where they head. From the booklets, to a chapter book!

THere are self-illustrated booklets at the end of Y1 to reinforce, easily, with gentle

practice, all they have acquired (all those phonics, rule tunes, syllabication,

punctuation). It is a lot and easier to nurture from little books.

Remember that even the lit study in Y2 is used for more than

reading practice, but literary analysis, so the level is meant to reinforce and

teach new areas of reading, not just for practice. Once they finish with PR1

they can read instructions for other subject areas, soon they can read a lot in

other subject areas.

I keep telling myself, we're not in a race, we're striving to Enjoy Learning.

That's tough and I have found PR to be gentle AND thorough!

I have it coming in the mail to use with ds just turned 7 who reads at a second grade level but needs advanced phonics work. He also hasn't had any spelling except a little in the small amount of ETC we did.

After researching PR extensively and looking at all the samples, plus what I know about SWR, which is similar, I personally would not have wanted to start PR any earlier than 1st grade, and with a dc that is already reading somewhat.
