Is this a major expense thing or basically cheap? Also are there different kinds of gutters or ways to hang them?

They're ridiculously cheap. Get plastic gutters, know ahead of time how long you want them so you can have them cut down to size if you need to. Tell the guys at the hardware store what you're using them for, and ask them how they would recommend mounting them. It's very easy.

Yes, be careful in mounting them. I was a public school teacher and heard good and bad stories about them. I heard some bad stories about walls being torn down by them (drywall). Cinder block walls did better with them.

ETA: The end caps were the most expensive part and I think of them as optional. If you sand the ends nicely, you could easily leave them off.

I priced them recently at Home Depot, and the plastic gutters (white) were $6.04 for 10 (or 12) feet length (I can't remember which). I didn't price the endcaps.

 

As long as you use long screws (at least 1 1/2 inches) directly into the studs, you shouldn't have a problem with them tearing out the drywall. They may scratch the sheet rock and texture, though, so you may need to touch up after removing them in a few years. Put them low enough that your kids won't be tempted to pull down on them.
