A home for their hearts
They need to be on about a third grade reading level for my dd9 to be able to read by herself. Thanks!
Faithr
Books by Robert Clyde Bulla are good. The 'I Can Read Book' series Level 3 (Grades 2-4) published by Harper Trophy has several books: George the Drummer Boy by Nathaniel Benchley, Same the Minuteman (same author), The Battle for St. Michaels by Emily Arnold McCully, The Drinking Gourd by F.N. Munro, Wagon Wheels by Barbara Brenner, Buffalo Bill and the Pony Express by Eleanor Coerr, The Long Way to the New Land and The Long Way Westward by Joan Sandin, Dust for Dinner by Ann Turner. There are more. It is a very good series that I often see Barnes and Noble or Borders.

Samiam
I always pull my reading list from the catalogs of Sonlight, MFW, and Beautiful Feet. I don't use their curriculum but I can tell they have wonderful selections for reading, so I pull from those. Keep the catalogs handy year round in their own special location. meet me in paris
The Dear America series is my favorite for that age group. Here's the link for the list of titles.
meet me in paris
I forgot! I also really like this series of biographies. They're all about 100 pages and they're very clearly written, geared toward 3rd-5th graders.

Jen the RD
If you'll check out the Sonlight catalog or their website, you'll find wonderful titles from their Core 3, 4 programs. We used these for my dd in 3rd & 4th grades. They were excellent choices. Jennifer
LNC
My library has all of the many OOP Childhood of Famous Americans series. http://www.redshift.com/~bonajo/COFA.htm They are a 3rd grade reading level and enjoyable reads. They are fictionalized biographies of the person's childhood - with imagined conversations etc. But, they are very engaging introductions to famous Americans for new readers of chapter books!
