  1. Well, some kids never outgrow coloring. I still enjoy it from time to time. :D Note-taking is a possibility also, though.
  2. Yes, my issue with the student pages was trying to find them at a price I could afford, which is why I'm here, a month before we need to start the book, asking for suggestions on what to do with it. :001_rolleyes:
  3. That's my only concern---that dd will zone out just listening. I could give her a related coloring book or pen and paper for doodling or something....
  4. How did you use iCivics? Did you just let your dc play the games, or did you use the curriculum units?
  5. This may seem like a dumb question. How do you use the K12 HO text? There are no review questions in it like I would expect in a traditional textbook. Someone (Crimson Wife?) recommended this: https://www.criticalthinking.com/getProductDetails.do?id=06001&code=c , but I'm not sure about lining it up. Plus I wonder if it will end up being too much reading for my dd. I would like to have some map work involved, but I don't really want to have to purchase a set of historical map right now, and then have to try to line it up with the HO chapters. I guess I'm just wondering what others are doing in addition to reading the text. Would anyone care to share?
  6. Do I want the CD or DVD version of the lectures by Dr Vandiver? I'm on a limited budget, but if having the visual makes a big difference, I'll spring for the DVDs.
  7. I'm looking for a civics books/course/materials written from a completely secular, liberal point of view for an 11yo. I want an overview of how the US government works, why it is set up the way it is, the constitution, the rights and responsibilities of citizens, etc. Any suggestions?
  8. Is the Memoria Press geography secular?
  9. Thank you. Sorry, yes, I was referring to K12 Human Odyssey and the World History Detective book from Critical Thinking Co. I appreciate the responses here. I am trying to plan what to do for history on a limited budget with a non-history-loving child. Perhaps WHD would be an interesting addition to just reading the K12 text? Thanks again, everyone.
  10. Can you tell me more about how you use these together? Do you try to align the chapters? I've got HO vol 1 on the shelf, to begin in the fall. I really think my dd needs something to help her with retention and comprehension...Would World History Detectives fit the bill? Thank you!
  11. Has anyone put together a schedule correlating these two? If so, I would love to see it. :)
  12. I'm looking for a blank timeline that I can put in a binder. I would prefer one with the years already marked on it so I don't have to worry about trying to figure out spacing. Are there any free printable timelines out there?
  13. For those of you recommending a more straightforward introduction, do you have any specific recommendations?
  14. The strange thing is that the first 3 years we lived here, we had no rats, then suddenly we did. Nothing changed....the feed was there before, etc.
  15. Just thought I'd follow up to let you all know I did get the root canal and it was fine! I didn't feel a thing and it was over with quickly. However, I did have a super bad infection in there, so he put some antibiotic in the tooth and covered it with a temporary filling. I have to go back in a month to get the temporary filling removed, and if the infection has cleared up, I will get the permanent filling then, followed by a crown.
  16. I don't know. Maybe. Either way, they're here, and I need to get rid of them. Blech.
  17. I live on a farm. We have a chicken coop. The farmer next to us stores feed uncovered in a shed next to our house. We're surrounded by cornfields.
  18. Oh, did I forget to mention that we have snakes under our house as well? Yep, black snakes.
  19. Believe me, we have sealed up holes. They just chew news ones. We have put the pet food in a metal container with a lid. We have used sticky AND snap traps. The sticky traps are worthless. The rats just drag them around and then free themselves. We caught a few with snap traps, but then the rats apparently learned to avoid them. We have the sound device you are talking about, a Pest Chaser I think, and it always seemed to work for mice but doesn't affect the rats. I just don't know what else to try.
  20. My dog would definitely chew through plastic. Will have to google Rat Zapper. I have an outdoor cat. He does eat rats, and so does the dog. I just don't have *enough* of them to control the problem. I have tried the sticky traps...using the ones designed for RATS, not mice, and the rats had no problem getting out of them. They just left bits of fur behind. Yuck.
  21. I think I would only need to put poison in the attic and under the house as well. My landlords *say* there is no way my pets can get under the house, but I'm just not sure, you know? My father-in-law points out that this would be the wrong time of year to use poison (summer in the Midwest with no A/C...yeah). But I've GOT to get rid of them. I feel so...dirty. :ack2:
  22. You think like me. :) I told my daughter that I thought rats would make good target practice for her BB gun.
  23. How can I get rid of rats without accidentally harming my dogs or cat? We have sealed up any entrances we can find, used repellent, glue traps, and snap traps. I really dislike the idea of poison, but it may be getting to that point.
