Ok. So for a few years we used Calvert Lit and I found it to be the most thorough of anything else I have come across. Has anyone found anything similar to it? Background, comprehension w/a, historical insight, open/Socratic think about it question prompts and literary devices.Didn't know it would be such a tall order. I would even take an online class. Novel units and ties, spark notes and schmooch(sp) don't seem to go deep enough. Holt I didn't find q/a. Progeny press too much other stuff and not as deep. Suggestions? Sorry if it is a double post. The first one seems to be missing. Cost? Enjoyment? Time commitment? Worth it overall? I have a 5th grader. Looking at WWE.

What can you tell me about it? Cost? Time commitment? Enjoyment? Worth the investment? The website is down and I am collecting data for my 5th grader. Looking at WWE.

High School Government-care to share?
coloradomomof5 replied to pjssully's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I am also weighing my options. I purchased Notgrass but am reconsidering. I want it to be meaningful. New plan needed. Follow election and journal daily. Thoughts. Reactions. Facts. Whatever. Just please think and write. Thought it would be fun to look back in years down the road. Add complete guide to gov't and congress to read through. Add a few books like r u democratic republican or confused and the one about justice. And read through a few original documents and discuss/interpret. Maybe line by line rewrite in today's language. While reading the paper and looking for election news also find examples of the amendments in action and collect the articles. Every 3 weeks sit and discuss the articles and amendments with lawyer friend. We have studies all this before and I want him to be able to discuss gov't and be inspired to participate. I am yet to see a textbook that inspires. -

Please be aware that the SWI is not the full course and missing units. If memory serves, it is units 4,7, and 9. You might call IEW to clarify. It is less$ than the TWSS but if it is the first time using the program, you might want the full course.

Look around and study the methods. It can be a great fit or it can kill the love of learning and drive the LG to drink. Not a good fit for the kids in our home and took the silly LG YEARS to realize that. Lucky for the littles she did. Bigs r still in recovery mode. It is very much public school at home. Very safe. Very traditional. Set up a room and go. Allows you to school at home. If you want to educate at home it may not be the way to go.

I looked into classes with IEW online. Looked like a bit much. We did classes with Home2teach. Loved the hands off that I had but it didn't give the kids a formula or plan of HOW to write. It told the WHAT to write. We are going to try Saxon grammar/writing with a coach this year to help with edits and keep the kids accountable. It gives a plan of what to write withought the confusion of the style that IEW adds.

Reading/Lit. 7th grade--New thoughts!! :) (Post #15)

Love the idea of FS alongs side LL. I have my 8th doing LL and my 9th doing illuminating lit. Felt like both would be light compared to what we have done in the past but needed something independent. If we add and they bring me and expanse or two of each... Nice idea!! Who makes FS? -
I bought these and the BF guide to go with the kingfisher world encyclopedia for my 5th grader for the fall.
