  2. I haven't read any other responses yet, but I'll jump in.

My husband is a youth pastor, so yes, I like youth groups. That said, I have heard other's opinions on this matter and can at least see why they have the views that they do. A well run youth group, with a lot of parent involvement can be a beautiful thing. A badly run youth group is a potential disaster. Frankly, I'm not in youth ministry for the families that have it all together and are raising their kids well. I'm in it for the lost kids. The ones with parents that are often less mature than they are. That's not to say it's just a group of misfits. We do have students that come from great families, but struggle to make their faith their own. I think it absolutely helps to have another adult come up along side them and mentor them. I understand that some parents don't want that or don't think that their kids need anyone but themselves. I'm ok with that. I think God convicts us to decisions for our individual children and if God is in the lead, then I have no doubt that the child will be ok with or without a youth group. Youth groups are not for every student or family. On the flip side, I really don't understand the position that youth groups shouldn't exist at all. I have seen SO MANY lives changed that wouldn't have been otherwise. Youth groups have a purpose, a very holy purpose. We are Kingdom builders and whether or not you (in the global sense)personally choose to let your kids get involved, incredible things are happening through this vehicle.

  3. We've used core 3 and 4. We will be using core 5 next year as well. I have no intentions of moving away from it at this point. We did try sl la, but I didn't care for it at all. We now use Abeka for grammar, writing tales and spelling workout. We also are going to do sl science for the first time next year (5). We are using our cores 1 grade behind. I also stick to their schedules and am not one to rewrite my own, so I appreciate that aspect. Hth,

  4. Texas does not have a homeschool law. It had a court case in 1994 which decided that homeschools were the equivalent of private schools in Texas, which are completely unregulated by the state. So Californians would love to have a similar court case, since the private school law is similar.

But no, we don't want legislation if it can be avoided at all.

Well, now it looks like California has a court case that says homeschools are NOT private schools. What do we do with that?

  5. The parents in this case assert that when the mother gives the children

educational instruction at home, the parents are acting within the law because mother

operates through Sunland Christian School where the children are “enrolled.â€

However, the parents have not demonstrated that mother has a teaching credential such

that the children can be said to be receiving an education from a credentialed tutor. It is

clear that the education of the children at their home, whatever the quality of that education, does not qualify for the private full-time day school or credentialed tutor

exemptions from compulsory education in a public full-time day school.

That pretty much applies to anyone hsing in Cali through the affidavit. I really hate that Ca doesn't have established HS laws, just loop holes.

  6. That necklace was a disaster, wasn't it?

The worst though (by an enormous margin) was Tilda Swinton. She is not an unattractive woman (or at least, she doesn't have to be), but that was truly the most *awful* hair, *awful* makeup and *awful*... um, what to call it? "garment" she was wearing... I truly think it would have been challenging to make her more hideous if one were *trying*. Ick, ick, ick!

I do wish I had had a chance to see more of the movies this year. I just didn't have anything invested in most of the nominations because I hadn't yet seen almost any of the movies...

Totally agree. I change my favorite dress. Katherine Heigl was my favorite. She was stunning.

  7. This depends GREATLY on your area. The market is so tricky right now. We just sold our home in Florida with a realtor. It would not have sold by owner. There is just way too many homes on the market. I think you should really interview some realtors and get a feel for your market before making that decision. Even if you are in a healthy market, the mortgage situation is making things very tricky right now. With our sale, I am absolutely convinced that we would not have been able to handle selling it on our own. That's even just with the issues we've had since we got the contract. It has been very stressful and I'm glad we had our realtor there. If you do sell it yourself, remember to give room in your price for at least 3% commission for the buyer's realtor.

Edited to add- in tight markets, realtors will not bring their buyer to see FSBOs. Realtors support realtors. Just another thought. Not to be a total downer! The Florida market has thoroughly kicked our butts, so I'm a little weary at the moment. Good luck!

  8. I liked him so much that I forgot how to spell his name! I really enjoyed him, but I always enjoy him. He's my type of funny. I fast forwarded through most of the show, but I stopped to watch anytime he was on.

Was it just my tv, or did some of the ladies look reeaally pale? Nicole kidman, renae, and some others just looked very washed out. Cameron Diaz's lips have been injected within an inch of their lives. If she's not careful, she's going to turn into Goldie Hawn.

I agree that Jennifer Garner was at the top of the best dressed list. There was a definite theme in the dresses- lovely, curvy and with a little flare at the bottom.

I didn't see most of the nominated movies, but one that I did was "There Will Be Blood." AWFUL. Horrible. Long and weird. I just can't believe it was nominated for best director and picture! That alone makes me really not into seeing the other nominated films. I have to say that Daniel Day Louis did wonderfully, but I think I would love him in anything.

And for the record, I love Tivo. The Oscar's in 1 hour :)

  9. BALANCE

    1. Not letting life get in the way of school. Keeping enough days at home to get work done.

    2. Giving my kids enough play time with others. Getting out enough.

    3. It is so hard not to drive myself crazy with all of the options. Choosing curriculum, not second guessing. Being confident in our personal approach to homeschooling. This is a constant.
