  1. I've never heard of Alfred. So it's a self teaching program? We use Hoffman and like it. Sorry I can't help! I'm looking for a self teaching guitar, too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Pam- well I learned something new then! My CLE Facebook page told me they were formatted after each other. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. I would skip CLE's spelling and writing too, so I'm with you there [emoji4]. It's a strong program though. And convenient. Just as rigorous as R&S. They used to be distributed by the same company actually. R&S use to make CLE. Now it is Sunrise Publishers. Hake- the writing is separate from grammar so you can separate it. The workbook isn't meant to to written in, so it's similar to R&S there, but like R&S people often choose to write in the book to save time. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. CLE is more spiral. Hake has lots of review, too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. Paradox, do you mean there's new revisions coming out for cle? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. curious your opinions on grammar for these three curriculum choices... can you write in hake? I've heard its very thin paper, is it doable if you prefer to have your child write in the text? Which is your favorite and why? Here is what I am hoping for: independent lessons ( this would be for 4th grade), workbook format, diagramming offered, open and go, easy to teach, easy to use with multiple kids (maybe not all on the same level, but just easy to use different levels between several students).
  7. Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego!!
  8. My3girls... So glad to hear you use Spellwell!! I have book A and am considering it. I've not found anyone who uses it before! Do you think it is a strong spelling program? I like that it seems to keep it fun and it's something they can do independently. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. Sorry for all the typos[emoji4] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. Do mus girl! There is no shame in that. Nor is it a bad program. Don't waste a single moments peace over it. It is a solid program (read my recent post on it, lots of good things said). You can always add to it. It's easier to use an easier program and make it more challenging than it is to to use a "too challenging" program and make it easier (just my opinion). I think it is where your heart is? If my son was having those difficulties I would consider it. You have to do what you feel is best. No mom wants to math hop but sometimes yo just have to try. Hugs. 11. Elizabeth- are you talking about spelling power? That's what it sounds like. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. I'm interested in AAS, I just don't want to buy the whole kit. I need to look into if I can just buy bare essentials and be ok. Sounds like A&P wouldn't be a good fit so thank you!:) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. Any good book recs? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. I'm told you can get 25% off one book through Amazon today using code 25offbook... I just wish I had a book I wanted! There's too many to even choose from! And unfortunately it won't accept it on Singapore materials [emoji23] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. Does spelling plus teach by spelling rules? This is one I've not heard of before... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. Spellwell is also nice. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. Thanks for all the helpful tips ladies!! Well, none of my kids have any learning disabilities (that in aware of) and yes the writing is more than I'd like. I'll continue looking but I don't know about essentials. I like LoE's approach but I can't justify the huge price tag. My son will have completed LoE foundations A-D. So just trying to decide what might be a next step. He still needs help. He's not a natural speller and he does like rules. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. Thanks Tara [emoji3] is there a way to limit the writing without diluting the program? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. That's almost a deal breaker... The writing. Ok, that's good to know! Hm. Maybe I'll just stick with essentials. It's sooooo expensive though. $100 and that's for only half a year[emoji15] I'm looking at other similar rules based programs too, such as spelling by sound and structure. 20. I have seen a lot of you use this for spelling. i finish up LoE Foundations for my 2nd grader very soon and am looking for the next spelling program. Is Apples and Pears one that you can just "jump in to"? do you need to start at the beginning or just jump into whichever level is best? I haven't found much info on their website for placement. is it very teacher intensive? LoE is intensive, so I was wondering how similar they are. How long are lessons? I have considered moving to LoE Essentials but not sure about the investment, if I could find something just as good and cheaper, it sure would be nice. and something he could do a tad more independently would also be nice:) thought?
  21. I am looking for this also. We currently use Logic of English which is very "spelling rule" heavy and we love it! I am looking for something a tad more independent though. But if you don't mind hands on, definitely look at LoE.
  22. I agree that using Singapore or MiF would be a good way to challenge your son. I have a son that sounds very similar to yours and we use right start and he loves it! He has learned so much and it spirals so it's always new and fresh. However, we are moving to Singapore in a few months after he finishes level B of RS. I'm also a little scared of teaching it but we are doing what this poster said, and that's starting at 1a and moving through quickly. I did want to ask this poster regarding MiF vs Singapore, you said Singapore requires complex steps fairly early, does MiF not do that? Is the S&S that different and much slower? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. I just don't love the second ed C. And I adore A and B. But for just an interim year before beast it's probably fine, maybe add more subtraction :) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. We are finishing RS B and my son tested into 1b (and he's pretty mathy). The thing about RS vs SM is that RS doesn't do much subtraction in B and SM covers it a lot (in level 2). I'm actually going to start him in 1a, and zip through, just because it covers things differently than RS. But for you I'd say have him take the placement test. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
