  1. Thanks;) do you think SM is too tough that is isn't able to be adapted? What I mean is, if it gets too complex is it easy to slow down or alter? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Yes I've seen! And they sent me a free light unit to try too. Just call and ask[emoji5] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. We tried it. I own grades 1-3. It was truly hated by my kids and it was drudgery for me too, really! It's too much on a page and for a math anxious kid, the second he looked at it he was crying:-/ I wanted to like it and I still might try it later on when he's a bit older. SM is visually more appealing to him. And maybe CLE would work too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. I just bought it, but for grammar and not writing. I think I've heard it's not as strong on the writing as it is grammar? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. I want to know too. I just bought spelling you see level A for my 1st/2nd graders. It might be easy for them but they are both wiggly boys who detest writing/spelling so I think it'll work. I did look at SW and I just think it looks... Unimpressive. I'd love to hear why people like it! It doesn't seem to really teach spelling as much as it's just a workbook... Idk. And SSS is on my list too but not this year. Maybe next year. It's a lot more writing and I kind of don't like the way it's laid out... It's confusing to me sometimes (I can't tell what the pictures are... And kids have to write what they are. I can foresee frustration there, which is why I might wait until next year). 6. Yes he does understand some tricky concepts due to RSB. I don't like how it skips around. It's not mastery in my mind. Not really. And he needs something different at this point but I do firmly believe RSA and B to be crucial. I think you can introduce concepts with RS for sure. Have you looked at the Activities for Al Abacus book? It teaches all the concepts and is great. It's like a mini version of the full program. You could use it along with CLE. I actually considered this too. But for my guy I think (or I'm hoping) that SM will fit the bill. He's just a "math hesitant" guy. I'd say, he's good at it but it can stress him out. I'm hoping sm won't do that. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. Farrar you are very good at explaining it [emoji5] So I will order, just to get the discount, and hope I'll use it[emoji23] that makes total sense, right? Should I start with JiD and Wand? I haven't looked at HSBC yet so I'm not sure how it's packaged and sold (several levels or just pick and choose...) And thank you so much! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. Is there a point where strict rubrics are needed? Like an IEW type program? Maybe for high school? I like the BW philosophy but I'm definitely a step by step person so the "free flowing"-ness of BW scares me tad. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. Thanks! We posted at the same time, so I'll go back and write those down:) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. So I could use WWE and BW? And for very young elementary, TWJ isn't necessary? Which of her books would you say to start with for 1-3 grade? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. I'm following too. It all seems confusing to me. I'm going to retread this thread. What's the reasons people choose this over IEW (or vice versa)? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. I had no idea there were different games within dragon box?! Wow! If you buy through HSBC do you get access to all three you listed Monica? That's interesting. The FAN math looks fantastic! I think Singapore math standards gives lots of great review and seems like you can go slowly with it. I also have a boy like you... And we have been in right start and now moving to Singapore. I'm nervous too. But I keep coming back to it. Math mammoth was too much on a page and he was very anxious. I've also considered CLE and adding FAN to it. People say CLE is really good. But I've read in upper grades there's several pages (5-6) to do and tons of review and some people don't like it. There's always something about every program I think. 13. I just don't care to stay with it. I don't like C and my son is getting frustrated with it. It skips around too much and it's not visual enough (he does better with worksheets daily, which RS does not have). The excessive amount of manipulative are distracting to him. He's very much ready to move on from the great foundation it's laid. I also need something a bit less parent intensive. I'm schooling four kids and RS is too much for me to get done with all four. 14. I have a boy that's intimidated by tough topics. He shuts down if things get too abstract or deep but yet he is very good at some mental math concepts. I wouldn't say he's terrible mathy though. I am using right start now and it's going well. We are moving to Singapore standards 1a (just to cover any gaps and move more slowly) in a month or so. He's in 2nd grade and finishing up RS B. do you think Singapore is a good choice for this type of kid? I wonder sometimes if I've made a good choice. Of course we can change if need be, but I hate waffling. So what would you say is a good math that is strong on the mental/conceptual side but doesn't overwhelm the student with too many concepts too quickly? Is SM fit the bill? I've heard of MiF but after oolong at it, I felt it was so textbook'y. I thought SM looked easier to teach. Also, separate question, of using CLE, what would you add to cover the conceptual side that CLE lacks? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. What is the zombie math booksandboys? Sounds fun:) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. I use sm standards and really like the extra review built in. But I've read that you can switch between standards and U.S. edition, so if it doesn't work out, there's always that:). I think it would be good for a wiggly kid. My ds7 is that way and I've often times considered whether he had some adhd (but not diagnosed). We do right start too and it's good but almost makes it harder for him to concentrate. He needs more mastery and also something to look at instead of all manipulatives. A worksheet seems to help focus him. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. Dreambox is so awesome. My kids also like prodigy and math rider. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. I use LoE and have finished D with my 2nd grader. I never added to it except for readers and handwriting. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. I would either do a) continue CLE but cut out/limit review he doesn't need. Totally ok to do that. Or b) do Singapore and add some review. So easy to do. There's many avenues to do so. CLE might be more open and go and since he already does well with it I think you could just have him not complete all the review. Or skip it completely and save it for a "review day" where that's all he does. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. I looked at MCT but the price deterred me:-/ but you seasoned FLL people, could you say whether or not you need to start at level 1? It'd be for 1st-2nd grade. :) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. I've heard great things about Time Traveler Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. I love this. I feel the same. Not comparable. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. I'm looking for something for my 6.5 yr old. He's taking lessons but I'd love something to supplement at home. Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
