He doesn't have a diagnosis, but Celery does, and my brother does, and I've had more than one therapist tell me they think my wife does, and I've suspected for a few years now that Broccoli might too (and so does the nurse who does his annual checkups), so, yeah. And yep, same thing with math. And I do often just let it slide, and when I don't I try to be supportive in an understanding way, rather than in an argumentative way, but, omg, sometimes it's just too much to have him tell me yet again that he wrote the correct answer and I must have changed it, kwim?

I remembered Renai's post when we walked back from the library, so I asked the kids, and Broccoli was like "I've never heard of hyphenation", so, I talked to them about it. Then after we got home we worked a bit on spelling, since, as my mom said, Celery's spelling is 'weak' (um, yeah mom, it's his lowest score, but, 57th percentile is still not, er, 'weak'?). Anyway, I printed out a 7th grade spelling word list and had both kids write down 15 of the words that I dictated. They both got 4 wrong (the only word they both got wrong was 'adequate', lol). So, I had them copy the words they'd gotten wrong a few times correctly, and Broccoli threw a big tantrum. I'm so, so, so tired of him claiming that he wrote words correctly the first time and that I must have changed what he wrote. Like I'd want the extra effort of changing what he wrote just to make him do more work, and like I'd bother to fake his handwriting (which is way different from mine) for that. Uh-huh. It gets old, being accused of that. I'm all like "dude, maybe that's what you had in your head, but it's not what your hand wrote down", but he's adamant *I* changed it. Sigh.

Someone needs to invent bandaids for on your tongue.

Yeah, in all fairness, mine (especially Gene) do better with multiple choice as well, but hey, I can now report another >33rd percentile to the school district, so... 🙂

It's one of the colleges profiled in "Colleges That Change Lives" by Loren Pope (at least the 2013-2014 edition I have checked out from the library). I haven't read the section on that college yet, and even if I had, you'd probably be better off reading it yourself. A book like that might appeal to your son anyway, as it lists some other quirky small colleges.

I did use both the scent stuff and peanut butter on the other kinds of traps and peanut butter definitely beats the special stuff they sell. The linked trap worked better iirc than the slightly cheaper similar trap that's completely metal (it's been a few months, so, I may be misremembering, but one of the two kinds was extremely trigger-happy (iirc the one I linked), and I managed to trigger it twice putting it down not gently enough, as well as catching my own thumb once, but hey, w/e is best for catching mice was the goal, though catching yourself isn't very pleasant).

Yes, after Labor Day... I honestly have no idea yet if I'm completely crazy to be contemplating AP exams next year, so maybe I'll just look into CLEP instead since they have a later deadline? At least I guess I have the weekend to think things over, since schools aren't going to be answering their phones till Monday anyway. Are there any negatives to signing up for an AP exam in 7th grade (12yo) and then later deciding to not take the exam after all or taking it and getting less than a 3? (Other than obviously the money wasted, which isn't a huge concern).

Argh! Thanks for this thread. My oldest has been *really* into economics lately, so I was contemplating whether he might or might not be able to take the AP Macro/Micro exams next year. I'd already noticed the unfortunate change to a Nov 15 deadline, but based on what some of y'all are saying I might have to talk to schools in October?

Pretty good. This past week was a bit crazy, with Broccoli yelling "Pikachu" a lot - not sure if the stress of testing was getting to him, or the anticipation of his first soccer match (which was canceled because of weather), but anyway, that's over now. They play soccer three nights a week now through some free local program at the park a block and a half from here, so that's nice. And Celery still reads books like they're going out of fashion - this week he's read Animal Farm, 1984, and Lord of the Flies, among other ones (where's that fainting emoji?).

My DW may or may not take the kids camping this weekend, if that counts for vicariousness.

I'm nervous at the idea of touring the US for a year though. I told DW that she'd need to get back on bipolar meds first for sure. It sucks worrying about it more than being excited.

In our almost 14 years of marriage we've never lived somewhere with more than 1 bathroom. In fact, my wife recently showed me an RV with 1.5 baths and I freaked out at the thought of the wasted space and the ridiculousness of it (she thought I'd like the floor plan, not counting the extra half bath, but I was too wtf to even look). Did I mention we're thinking of touring the US for a year? Btw, I obviously don't have 5 daughters. If I did 1.5 baths in a house (not an RV) would sound good. That said, my mom grew up in a house with 1 bathroom and she has 5 sisters and 1 brother (my grandfather added a 0.5 bath when I was a kid). They did have sinks in 3 of the bedrooms though.

The violin rental place is now selling some of their cosmetically less pretty instruments, so I'm going to try some 1/4 size for Broccoli tomorrow when I can pick up my rehaired bow and restringed violin. ?
