  1. My 2nd grader's "Social Studies" this month is good citizen traits. I think that is more appropriate for 7 year old's than standard social studies.
  2. I like to know my children's teachers as well as possible. I think they way you behave in a guests home says a lot about a person. It also gives the teacher a better idea as to where your child is coming from.
  3. warneral: I have been looking for a math game for my NOOK color that is not timed and not multiple choice so she can work on that while I am busy with my other two children but I haven't had much luck yet. jujsky: I'm waiting on History until we don't have to spend so much time on reading. Not because she can't read. Does that make sense? Carol in Cal.: I was planning on starting with Saxon 1 but I haven't been able to find it sense we moved. I think it got stuck into one of the 10 boxes marked MISC. :tongue_smilie: I went through Saxon K and pulled out the things she doesn't know and we are working through those until I find Saxon 1. Thanks for the Magic Schoolbus idea. I loved those as a kids and had kind of forgotten about them.
  4. I have a seven and a half year old daughter who is enrolled in the Hospital/Homebound program. A public school teacher is sent to our house for an hour and a half once a week. She is enrolled as a second grade student. Academically she is closer to a beginning first grader than a beginning second grader because of the amount of school she has missed because of her health. (I had always planned on homeschooling but sent both girls to school temporarily when my husband passed away so I could get our lives back together) Her teacher leaves under a half hour of daily work behind for her to complete. This adds up to under 4 hours a week including time with the tutor. In addition to what the tutor is requiring we are working our way through Saxon K (hitting only the lessons she doesn't have a good grasp on), OPG, FLL level 1, and WWE level 1. We are not doing any formal science (though she is making her own mini nature show) or History (I want to add this in as soon as she is reading a little better). With everything we do, we normally start at 9 and are done with school by 11 at the absolute latest. Is this enough to catch her up? I know I don't need her to completely fit into the public school box but with in a couple years she will need a heart transplant and will be almost completely out of commission for up to 6 months. My goal is to have her to a point of reading fluently (not at adult level but able to decode words with out assistance) and able to do basic math (4 functions) in the next two years. Am I being realistic? Are we doing enough?
  5. Vincent: Play-doh, Coloring, & Picture books Trin: Public school Kindergarten & The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading Anya: 3 days a week Public School, 2 hours a week Hospital/Homebound, Daily Sonlight Remedial Reading Program, 2 - 4 times a week Writing With Ease Level 1, & At least 2 times a week First Language Lessons Level 1 I might try The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading with her again but we'll see.
  6. Thanks, I looked at that but, while we receive enough to get by, a monthly fee just isn't an option right now for us.
  7. My family has never really digged the "homeschooling thing", as they call it.
  8. Long story short, first a little background. I am a 24 year old widow with 3 kiddos. My girls are 6 and 4 and I have a 2 year old son. We are blessed to be receiving enough in survivor benefits from social security to make it with out me working. However, I am now a full time college student, 99% online, which equals a lot of not sleeping. We always planned on homeschooling but when Steve passed and I realized I was going to have to be in school full time for the first semester or two I enrolled my 6 year old in 1st grade and elected for full time public PreK for my 4 year old, which she is eligible for because she has a speech delay. Fast forward a bit and my 1st grader is not doing well in school at all, then her heart condition worsens and her cardiologist says to pull her out. The home-bound public school program is a bust (2 hours a week maximum) so I enroll her in Connections Academy's free public online school. The curriculum is full of busy work and is way to easy for her except in reading, which she is behind in. There is no option to change the curriculum to fit her better. At this point I am thinking of just pulling her out and doing it myself. She can't be in public school and I am not getting what I need from Connections Academy. I am worried about the extra work load on myself being fully responsible for her school in addition to my school work and the lack of formal accountability. These are things I would normally lean on Steve for. I don't have anyone else in my life that is able/willing to help me with schooling on a regular basis and most of them disprove of homeschooling in general. Any outside insights or just a push would be appreciated. Thank you.
  9. Thanks y'all. I'm gunna read over them closer and then look at my calendar. I love this form. :)
  10. We are going to be schooling year round. I was wondering how everyone plans their breaks. Do you sit down and decide when they will be at the begining of the year or do you take them as you need them?
  11. I am writing up a very rough 12 year plan for my schooling. Please don't tell me not to worry about it. I have to see the big picture. In The Well Trained Mind 2nd edition SWB says that Latin Road is not a completee grammer program. Does completing Phonics Road before hand change that or would a Grammer supliment be a good idea? What about adding WritingStrands or simmilar? What about after level 4, do you do bridge?
  12. Academy of Science for Kids has 12 little hands on kits in it and an little journal with a page for each kit. I saw it at a Homeschool Convention and it just looked like to much fun to pass up. As for SOTW we are planning on taking it VERY SLOW. Rabbit trails are our friend. :D As for giving to much advice, boy do I need it. :tongue_smilie:
  13. I am starting Kindergarten with my oldest this year. :hurray: I also have a 3 year old and a 6 month old. We are going to be doing The Phonics Road to Spelling and Reading Level 1, Right Start A, Story of the World Volume 1, and Academy of Science for Kids Seeds. We plan on doing Phonics and Math daily, Science and History twice a week and Art on the fifth day. I am a very type A, make a schedule, kind of person. I've given us 2 hours a day to work on school. I have absolutely no delusions that we are going to be able to sit down and finish it all with out the 3 year old and the 6 month old needing me at some point. Does 2 hours sound like a good amount of time to accomplish Math, Phonics, and either Science, History, or Art, including interruptions?
  14. We are doing something very similar. We are moving from Fl to Indianapolis in mid Dec. I was born here and have seen snow maybe twice. Just know your not alone.:grouphug:
  15. I didn't read the other reply's but have you looked at the Dear America books and the Royal Diaries. They might be for girls who are a little older but they are the same type.
  16. I was about to post asking about homeschooling in Indianapolis. :tongue_smilie: I'll be joining ya'll by the end of Jan. :hurray:
  17. Thanks for all you input. I talked to her teacher today when I picked her up. She said she didn't correct her handwriting because, and I quote, "it would show I was not proud of her for trying." and correcting her would "break her spirit." I told them we were going to drop to half days for next week (we get the half day free through a state program) and plan to talk to DH when he gets home.
  18. This is my first post and its defiantly not what I thought I would be asking about. I have 2 DD's ages 4 and 2. DD4 is in Pre-K at a small Montessori school and is way to smart for her own good. DD2 is at home with me, she has SPD, a speech delay, and is fairly average academically. I also have a c-section scheduled 10/21 for our first DS. We are a little concerned about the affect Pre-K is having on DD4. Before she started she wrote her name Anya (with the y backwards) and now writes her name Aaya (y still backwards), she hasn't really picked up any new reading skills, and she has started asking to "do school" when she gets home from school. What she has pick up from school is a bad attitude and a couple choice words. She likes school and it gives her time to play with other kids but even my husband who was undecided on the topic of homeschooling the kids want to pull her out. Now the question is do we wait until christmas break or do we do it now?
  19. I looked for a homeschool home ec course a while ago and only found http://www.clp.org/store/by_course/121 . There is a home ec 2 also. I haven't used it, or anything from them, so I realy dont know much about it. I was mainly looking for myself because I never learned from my parents and I'm still less than 5 years into being a wife and caring for a house.
